Just confirm,-this is the Acer hard drive with Windows 10 ?
If so, that is why it is showing GPT SYSTEM !
I was getting brain scrambled, as we were talking about XP, and a Windows 7 machine -I had to go back your other post to check
Don't try changing to MBR, IF I AM CORRECT.

GPT based hard drives are the latest system, and are really only useful if you need more than 4 partitions
MBR based hard drives can only support up to 4 partitions
A good explanation here- but using Windows 7 here.....

    Was W8.1 when puchased

    O.K
Don't try changing to MBR- Just checked, anyway- Only the purchased version will do converting-
    Windows 7 x 64 seems to be o.k for UEFI (GPT) -
When doing the copy with Partition Wizard, this little box should be what you see when it has completed successfully
Just check that it is also active, and click apply button to ensure it is completed thoroughly

    Something not right.
All I have now is 3 operations to copy disk under the pending tasks tree ?
    Nothing else happening
Also when selecting target disc, was given message to go into bios to change boot ?
    CONFUSED

O.K- shut down a Partition Wizard - safely disconnect duplicator - turn duplicator off
Remove old C: hard drive -
Leave old D: drive in duplicator- reconnect duplicator - switch duplicator on - wait for windows to recognise it- maybe just a ping,or,it will say so.
    Then start up Partition Wizard
Look at Partition Wizard, and report back, -we can go through it together
I WILL BE BACK IN ABOUT 15 MINUTES

  6. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

We need to check old D; hard drive, first.
Does it still show as GPT disc -we need to see what it says in both PW and Windows DISC MANAGEMENT
also START UP WINDOWS DISC MANAGEMENT
DO NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE UNTIL YOU POST BACK
It would help if you can upload a picture of the system with Partition Wizard running, and another with Windows disc management

Sorry I missed the last posts.
Partition wizard is running copying the disc as we type and I dare not stop it now

    O.K
perhaps I misunderstood- I thought you said it would not do anything - KEEP IT GOING NOW, and come bck to let me know the outcome
I need to know if you get that last box saying it completed .
Please leave as it is , if you get that completed box, until you let me know that it completed successfully

  9. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

If all is well, and that completed box comes up - just close the box- do not click on yes, or, no.
Look at the left column, and click apply, if it is not greyed out.
Then close Partition Wizard, safely use windows to remove the duplicator , and when it says it is safe to remove the duplicator, switch duplicator off, and remove completely.
If it does not complete properly, let me know- I have a little time this morning, but I would like to see you through it.

I am running out of time- is the copying still in progress ?
If all goes well, you should be able to put the cloned drive in, and start up your Acer
If you cannot get into Windows, you can see if it will work the old way.....
If it does not start, come back again, as you may have to run CHKDSK C:/F FROM STARTUP
To do this, shut down the Acer, and start fast tapping the F8 button, to get into safe mode.- you may have to try several times because Windows 10 boots so fast.
When the box comes up you need to choose safe mode with command prompt, and when the window comes up just type in CHKDSK C:/F
    - note the space between chkdsk and c.
Windows will then attempt repairs, and when it is finished, just type in EXIT, and press enter.

If you get into Windows o.k then you might be interested in this post- I show a way to make Windows boot so that you can have options to boot, without actually being in Windows, at startup, as you will have time to choose your options, and advanced mode to get to command prompt, as the old way might not work in Windows 10 - read all posts on that as others have offered more on this.

I have posted the last few posts here, in cae I have to go, as I am due out in about 20 minutes, and I did not want to see you stuck.
If you have problem, hopefully someone else will be able to help, until I get back,( which could be a few hours).

Patience means everything when working on pc/laptop problems, and you have shewn plenty of it.

LOL, me and my posts. Its actually now finished.
However, I do not get the message you pasted.
I do get a box Titled FINISH
    And the message
Applied all the pending changes successfully
Both drives display the same 465 GB.

I realise that the one I showed might have been a different effort I made and saved some time ago, but you needed to see the finished pop up.- That was imperative, to bee sure it had copied fully, as it did not copy fully for you previously, and I need to make more screenshots when I do these things I tend to forget, at times -
    Try the cloned drive-
I am around for a little while, so I will look out for your next post

Ok, got acer boot screen then some 5 mins later my log in page.
entered password and then had to wait another 5 mins before desktop appeared.
My bullguard security suite will not launch and the machine seems very slow

It is worth running CHKDSK /F from administrative command prompt, whilst in Windows.
Also it is worth running sfc /scannow as above in administrative command prompt When completed, type EXIT, AND PRESS ENTER
This will at least check file and disk and fix any errors, and after starting up and restarting a couple of times can also help.
I am late going out , now, so see what that will help- I will look back in as soon as I can
Type cmd in search box-right click, run as administrator- or, right click start button, and choose command prompt admin

Both scans done and a couple of restarts
Will leave the formatting of old "C" drive until perhaps tomorrow when Im home from my course and your next steps.

  21. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

Before formatting that old C; drive, it can be worth running CHKDSK /R - This also does the same as with the /F, but if a sector cannot be repaired it will sort of hide that sector, so that it cannot be used- it will effectively not use that bad sector at all, but it might have an file that will effectively be deleted, if it cannot be repaired - so- Run CHKDSK /R and then run sfc /scannow again as you have just done.
If everything is O.K after that, then I would do the following

Next - in search box- type in msconfig- in the small window that comes up, click the boot tab, and change timeout to 10 seconds, click O.K, and restart.
First look at this video by Major Attitude, it can show you some useful tips
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index....and-speed-up-your-computer-for-anyone.316215/

I use Advanced system care on my computers to help keep windows running sweet- the free version is very good, and would suit the less experienced -It can scan and sort out so much.
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index....speed-up-protect-and-optimize-your-pc.315884/

Then I would format the old drive, knowing I did not need it.

How long would one expect this scan /r to take ?
Its been stuck on 16% for more than 30 mins now

  23. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

Old saying- how long is piece of string- No seriously, you have been very patient, and done well, just give it time.
If there is a bad bit causing the problem , after copying, it is worth doing.
Look at major attitudes video, and try going through the different things, and at Advanced system Care.
Keep posting, and let us know how it is going

  24. greenhut

    Ok, but
Can I safely abort this scan if it is not completed before bed time and then re run at a later date ?
Been 4 hrs now at 16% and I am reluctant to leave this running all night as I have early starts tomorrow.

  25. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

It can be dodgy to stop it, as it corrects, and repairs, and is not advisable- that is why I aid not to format the other drive, yet -in case.
If you stop it it may lose some data on this hard drive, or, even make it so that it will not re-boot into windows.
While you still haave the original, you can take that chance, if you cannot leave it running overnight, but it might meaan doing another run on copying the original. if it will not start, or, run properly afterwards.
If you want to, you can try clicking the close button at the top right of the command prompt- or, holding the shut down button, for about 10 seconds, until it shuts down - it may restart in CHKDSK again on restart- So many variables.
if it closes , andyou can restart-all is o.k, but if you cannot get it started into Windows afterwards, its baack to a re-clone again from original.

    Apologise for my impatience.
Scans all completed just before 2300hrs bst.
No issues encountered and boot time after login slightly quicker.
Will run the other tools later today.
    Thanks again

Good- the /r switch can take so much time, but I wanted to be sure- looks like the hard drive is good.
It will surprise you how much Advanced system care will help, and following Major Attitudes video .
In installing Advanced system care (if you decide to,-I do recommend it) If you just let it scan and see what it finds, it usually offers to to make system restore point, before correcting things, you can safely click to allow it to make corrections. It also offers , driver updater, and an uninstaller program- these work well, too.
The driver updater is very good, and I have found that safe , too.

Wow, thats some neat programme that Advanced sytem Care.
I do use Cc and malwarebytes regularly and also nightly Bullguard scans and few more things now and then.
Advance found 14.5GB of junk . Also qute a few drivers that needed updating despite me trying before to fid out of date drivers.
    Great stuff. Thanks again.
I guess it is now safe to format the old C drive or would it be prudent to wait day or two?

I would just run it in a day, or, two- if all is well- then you can work on the other hard drive-
I am very pleased for you- you had to work hard, but patience, and determination won.

All of majorgeeks are stars - but, thank you - I know everyone on here have different skills, and do their utmost to solve problems.
When you start on the second hard drive, remember what I said about hiding the dodgy part
,and using the rest - come back on a new thread, to get others to help, if I am not around , but I am not sure who else has 'played ' with hard drives as much as I have, so I will look out for it.
I suggest you post something like - using a hard drive with bad sectors, and see what others might be able to offer.
I will try to pick it up, if Iam available, but I have to be out and about tomorrow.

    OK thank you.
I presume your referring to post 35 n this thread for the formatting and partioning of the old C drive ?

    Yes.

Before you finish with the now C: drive , that is being used, I would use Advanced system care defrag tool to tidy up, and this will help with efficiency, s it is far better and quicker than the Windows defrag.
