I have the Win 7 disk...

Would i be correct in assuming that this system repair will not be like a fresh install eg. will delete all program files etc...?

EDIT: There seems to be no seeds for the win7 disk (i have mine, but thought if i tried a different one i may get better results, my disk my have errors on it...)

Yes. It should only check and replace corrupt files as sfc should have. You have to set the bios to boot from the cd. I can't recall all the options once you get into it.

It should give you an option to do a system restore to before this occurred.

    Back again...

Just tried your suggestion, or to put it more accurately - just tried to try your suggestion, i boot to the win 7 recovery disk and am present by the following options:

    Startup Repair
    System Restore
    System Image recovery
    Windows Memory Diagnostics
    Command Prompt

... i dont see anything that would let me repair/replace corrupt files.

Also i tried to run sfc /scannow using the command prompt option, but i keep getting the same message telling me that the system is already awaiting repair and to restart windows and try again, which i did several times - but it keeps telling me the same thing over and over...

Vista and 7 "sfc" will rarely ask for DVD, because there is plenty of backup files on hard drive already.

Here is how perform repair installation on Win 7: http://www.w7forums.com/repair-install-t1204.html
It shouldn't touch your data, but some programs may need to be reinstalled.

    I just downloaded CBS.log and I'll take a look....

Apparently, "sfc" scan stops at this:
    C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_atiilhag.inf.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_a84b3670179ab5eb
which I assume is related to your video card.

    Did we run chkdsk yet?

    Hi broni

yes... i have ran chkdsk before with no errors, but ill run again just to be sure and let you know how i get on...

I also have tried Satrow's suggestion and removed all peripherals (except mouse and keyboard), and have unistalled most of my programs - but just had another BSOD, dont have to say what game i was playing :p

One more thing. I'd like to see.

    Download Process Explorer: http://majorgeeks.com/Process_Explorer_d4566.html
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.

Post two logs, while idle and while playing Crysis.

    OK

chkdsk complete, basically it said - 'windows has checked the file system and found no problems'...

Well kinda late here, so gonna get some sleep. will continue with any suggestions tomorrow (or i should say today - over here in the uk at least :p)

I could do with seeing that dmp so we can check all the loaded drivers are the latest available.

The sfc scan stopping at an ATI driver may well be very significant; the oldest dmp indicated 3x graphics-related files (post #4) and you already said it seemed to get worse after changing the gfx card (#1 and flagged up by Caliban in #12).

I'd want to try a drivers-only installation for the gfx card without the CCC bloatware - after a complete uninstall and sweep to rid Windows of the old drivers/CCC.

EDIT: I'd also like to see ZA and Bitdefender scrubbed from the system (use W7's firewall), I'm inclined to think that both of these need isolating from the system until it's been thoroughly tested. There are full uninstallers for both somewhere (editing time is short in this forum ;) ).

    Process Explorer log looks perfect.
    System Idle at 94-95%.

Well, since we're dragging out all possibilities - bad hardware, straight from the box (video card) happens :)

    Additions to #63:

Bitdefender uninstall - I'd use the linked tool after the normal uninstall and a reboot, just to be sure.

ZA uninstall: not sure which version you have but checkout this thread for some details about checking it's all gone (and note the software listed in post #2, point #3 as not playing nicely with ZA).

    Hi

Sorry for being late (incase you where waiting).

I have unistalled Both Bitdefender and Zonealarm as well as updating as many drivers as i could... and so far i have been playing crysis nearly all day:), without any issues, no crashes, BSODs or anything.

So maybe it was one of those, but not sure which one - i will install one (maybe ZoneAlarm) again and see what happens. If nothing happens and everything goes ok with no BSODs, then i will unistall that program and install the other - it has to be one of them and i'd like to know which...

As requested by satrow i have attached the last dmp...

    Keep you posted.

Do attach the logs a per the instructions below (@Broni, I know you are new and learning how we operate, but we like to have any logs attached in a text file as it keeps down the thread lenght and also allows the forum search function to work very well, if random logs are posted 90% of the info is junk and you end up searching for ages to find a releven tthread with info you may like, kinda like searching google for faile names, you have to wade through 1m and 1 HJT logs to find definitive answers on specific files etc

so just a heads up only :) )

Latest log reveals much the same as the last 4 or so, nothing helpful.

Updated the AMD/ATI and Realtek drivers, I hope?

I'd like to drag you away from using ZA (it really does not play well with a lot of security software), I'm currently trying out Privatefirewall, why don't you give it a try for a few weeks?

Keep playing but take a break every hour or so :)

    Hi satrow

Yes i have updated ATI Driver (assuming you mean the display ones...) and also the realtek drivers (again assuming you mean sound divers).

I heard Comodo firewall is quite good, but not sure if it has issues.

Almost been a whole day now and no BSODs, although for some reason after removing the anti-virus and firewall programs - crysis has become VERY stuttery - almost being unplayable, sweeping round looking in different directions and the HDD goes crazy and the screen keeps freezing while the HDD panics trying to reload the scene... not sure if it has anything to do with windows defender - will have to check.

    But so far no BSOD,s.

Re the stuttering, maybe a defrag will help pull files back together, you've done a fair bit of installing/uninstalling recently. Check the advanced settings for your ATI card in Display Properties, it may have slightly different settings to the old version (it may also be a little slower :( check out comments from other ATI/Crysis players).

Also ensure you don't have any monitoring software running, or new tasks enabled in Task Scheduler since you started this troubleshooting/updating process.

Comodo should be ok too, if a little 'noisy' (it was when I last used it) but ensure it only installs the firewall, not any extras that may be problematic. Best to keep the Windows Firewall only, until testing is finished anyway.

    Hi guys

Well Since unistalling both Bitdefender and Zonealarm i havnt had a single BSOD:celebrate, guess it was one (or both) of those. I am using Comodo firewall at the mo... seems ok - but like satro said - its rather 'noisy', gives lots of alerts, but seems to do its job.

Just hope it stays that way (no more BSODs), so far so good, have been able to play crysis for hours with no issues apart from stuttering - and i found that it was windows defender that was causing the stutter, even though i added the entire game folder to the excluded list it seems it was still performing some level of 'on-access scanning', after turning off windows defender everything was fairly smooth again - which isnt bad when you consider that im running at MAX settings @1920x1200 with 8xAA and average about 35 fps:).

    Will keep you all posted.

Thanks for the help thus far - much appreciated:clap

Windoze Defender huh? Fairly typical contender ... might be a good idea to consider creating an image at this point, it'll make things easier to reload if anything else bu**ers it up in future.

Glad it's still working out ok for you, 35FPS is no mean feat for that game ^^

    Hi satrow

Never thought of performing a backup until you mentioned it, will do know though, so thanks for the tip:)

yeah, Crysis is a beast no doubts there, min FPS i get on average is about 25, and max average is about 45-48fps... but average of 35. Would imagine id get even better results if i decided to overclock the card (still running @ stock). And max temp while playing crysis is about 58c @ 45% fan. So all is good in gaming world - that is, without the BSODs :p.

    Again keep y'all posted. :)

Personally, I've never seen Windows Defender catching anything.
I have it disabled in my books.

Well its been a few days now and not one BSOD:celebrate

Crysis is crashing ALL the time, but at least its not a BSOD.

I believe the issue to have been resolved - it MUST have been Bitdefender and/or ZoneAlarm causing the BSOD's (not sure how though).

I would just like to thank everyone who helped me with this issue....

    THANK YOU:):clap
