    OK, I'm back.

    ADSL is broadband;)

What I actually mean is how do you physically connect your computer to the Net. Did BT provide the modem and if so is it USB?

If you have a quick look at this page it'll explain what I mean.

    OK

Could you let me have the model number of the modem and could you describe for me, step by step what is occurring? How far do you get, errors arising etc, are these errors consistent.

Also a little summary of what the BT 'technicians' have tried.

Your machine specs would also help, you can go here,

The page is a link that will download Everest which is a sytem info utility.

If you look in the top middle of the page you will see a list of four MG download locations, (links underlined), and one for the author's site.

If you click on one of the MG links, it will start the download process, you should choose to save the file to your machine and when the download has finished double click on the file. That will install Everest.

Let us know when you've got to that stage.

Just a quick question on this one. Do you know if you have a username and password to connect via your ADSL, or is it just supposed to "connect" automatically?

You will need a user name and password to connect to your ISP which I assume is BT Broadband.

You should find these on the letter they sent you confirming the service start date.

I know this is stating the obvious but BT have been known not to tell the customer and the techies can make awfully large assumptions from a very small knowledge base IMHO

Also, if it is a PPPoE broadband connection that requires a username and password, have you attempted to try Windows XP's built in PPPoE utility?

SBC/Yahoo here in Michigan had their own proprietary software that I could install to connect, but using the connection utility included in Windows XP and not even installing their software has worked really well.

    Hi Sarge

It's pretty much all PPoA over here, especially with BT, I've had to deal with them on behalf of customers on occasions too numerous and painful to go into;) .

They used to be our state owned monpoly telecomm and post provider and some memes linger.
