It doesn't work all the time (someone may accidentally supply the wrong info, accounts may get deactivated, etc...), but I have used that site before to be able to read the New York Times website without having to register, as well as a few other sites that I can't remember at the moment.

Try it and see.

 

The proper use for it is for newspapers and the like, the inproper use for it is to gain access to sites such as this one. And of course, admins will have banned anyone who had the "sense" to put their login details up there.
