I was thinking of building a desktop, it will be my first time, so I just wanted to ask for some advice. My friend that built his own computer will help me with it. I just want some advice on the parts to see if there is something i could/should change that i can get for cheaper or that would work better. The computer will be just for gaming.
I'm buying all the parts from newegg.com, if you know where i could get them for cheaper please let me know.

EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 Superclocked Edition 896-P3-1257-AR Video Card $140.00

    Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor $190.00

GIGABYTE GA-G31M-ES2L Micro ATX Intel Motherboard $53.00

    G.SKILL 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Memory $52.00

COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black Computer Case $70.00

Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive $70.00

    Rosewill RP500-2 500W Power Supply $43.00

LG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model GH22LS30 LightScribe Support $27.00

also, I was trying to decide which OS to get, 64 bit or 32 bit vista. any help would be appreciated.
also 2, About how much will it cost to get a decent monitor for gaming?
I'm trying to get the computer + os + monitor for $1000 so i don't have much to spend.
    Any help will be appreciated.

hi there, you definitely need to change the power supply, with a quad core CPU and gtx 260 gfx card you cannot afford to get a bad quality power supply because it will ruin everything! You will need at least a 600-700w power supply to go with this system. My first suggestion would be this Corsair 650w which is $80 after rebate. One 52a 12v rail and 677 reviews, this is Corsair your getting a great quality product!
Apart from that flaw everything else seems ok! You should get 64bit vista as the 32bit version only recognizes up to 3.5GB RAM. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116488
Monitor wise this Hanns G 19" seems a good option as it's only $120

So this brings price around $900, I noticed you picked a micro ATX mobo this is not a good idea when you got a big gfx card and big case :p
So consider this MSI LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard - $85

This should make things better and more compatible, hope it has helped you :)

Most definetlly in agreement with Dacads about the PSU ..... but id probably increase the speed of your RAM from 800 to 1066 .... so it can keep up with that Quad and the Graphics Card ;)

I have built my new system but the cpu runs pretty hot and i need advice to cool it down

    i have a q9400
    16g of 1066 ram
    gtx 465
with no load my proc cores run 58, 54, 53, 55 (all these are in centigrade)
if i play a game that was made after 2003 it shuts down,
my computer room is about 70-75 degrees f
i have to put a box fan next to an open side of the case to drop the temp by 6-7 degrees c
what is the best way to cool my proc down

i have put new thermal paste on the fan
    i bought a coolermaster case with 6 120mm fans
do i need to get a watercooler or what is best i can't imagine pushing warm air faster is going to help it.

You should start a new thread as your issues are not the same as the OP's.;) It's way too hot man. Should be less than 40C idle at your ambient.
