building a portable hard drive

How difficult is it to build a portable hard drive? My computer was fried in a storm and the tech said the HD is OK but everything else is pretty much toast. I have searched, but I'm coming up with nothing. I am not completely useless with the tech stuff, but I am far from being a "majorgeek" so links and/or pictures would be awesome!

Just get an external enclosure; for example:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817716010

Note that this case is for a 3.5 inch hard drive. That would be the size of your HD if your computer is a tower or desktop box system; if your computer is a laptop or notebook, then you have a 2.5 inch drive and should get an enclosure for a 2.5 inch HD.
