techgage.com is one of my favorite "techie" web sites, and I was fartin' around over there and ran into this blurb about a laser powerful enough to burn stuff (including your own hand!) . . . it's available to the general public for about $200!!! How can these possibly be legal??? Who knows. Seems like a recipe for BIG problems.... it IS interesting though.....

:eek So your just burning stuff like you do with your laser,you remove your glasses to see what you've burnt and hit the one switch by accident,zap! Blind in one eye,forever!

I dunno maybe I'm getting old and too safety concious :cool Blue lasers are the bomb though kids:-D

If there was ever any doubt that George Lucas (yeah, the Star Wars guy) was kind of an a-hole (he is), he has recently rec'd a cease & desist order to try and force the makers of the laser to stop selling 'em. Why? He says that it infringes on his light saber design!! roflmao What a dork!

George Lucas is a tool,totally agree:-D We should cram a lightsaber 'you know where ' and turn it on.

Wait for light to come out of his eyes.

 

It doesn't have anywhere near enough power to melt metal 'its only a 1watt diode',you need a laser the size of a room to melt metal.

About the most it will burn through is some paper or balloons.

Actually I'm rooting for the higher power levels long term. There are lots of home made NC milling/engraving machines, a decent laser in a filter box would be cheaper. A really decent home workshop accessory. A bit more dangerous than a saw, but not by much if safety precautions are followed.
