I'm a little confused, you're asking for advice on a new DVD burner but in your second post you are telling us what is wrong with your old one to see if we can help fix it?

Well if thats the case, some more info about how and why your dvd burner died would be helpful. But first start off with the good old fashioned uninstall/reinstall of the device and driver via Device Manager.

As for advice on a new one, steer clear of Sony Optiac (compatbility issues as I found out the hard way)
Yes you can fit it yourself in about 3-20 minutes depending on your "Hands-on" skill level.
Even a monkey could do it, you can't go wrong because everything only plugs in 1 way, as long as you power off and unplug first you should have no issues.

Once installed you may have software/compatability issues but thats a whole different story... and unlikely.
