Is there some way to test the fastest my burner can go without errors witout killing discs? I know it can't go 48x anymore because the discs don't work, it can go 12x fine but I bet it could go a bit higher, I don't wanna waste any discs tho.

Including this web site, most decent download sites have free CD speed testing applications which could help you determine your drive's read speed, but CD burning software could also test your burner's writing speed (Nero has such free tools).
But remember these factors critical to overall burning performance:
    1) The max read/write speed of the burner
    2) The quality of the laser mechanizm inside the burner.
    3) The software used to burn CDs.
    4) How the CD burning software is configured for a given CD writing task.
    5) How the overall system performance (CPU speed, RAM amount, HD speed if files are cached instead of burned on the fly), adequate system power and cooling.
    6) How well the overall operating system is working.
    7) How the CD Drive (and if there is a separate drive used as a reader) is connected to the motherboard (and if applicable) to other drives.
    8) How the Drives' jumpers are configured (a CD burner should be in Master position is possible)
    9) If the DMA(Direct Memory Access) functionality (which could boost the Drive's performance but possibly compromising some stability) is enabled or not.
and last but not least 10) Speed and the quality of the CD media used.

These are what I can come up with for now....if you want me to explain any of these further in detail, I will but I might need more info from you.

Yeah, nero has something I think, NeroDriveSpeed or NeroCDSpeed? You sure it can test burning speed without killing a cd?

CDs are a dime a dozen, why worry about wasting one? I don't know about the UK, but here in the US every week or 2 there is a sale for 50 cds for $10 with a $10 rebate. Or something similar to that. Basically free CDs.
