need some opinions which game would you suggest I'm looking at far cry I know it's been out a while, but I haven't even got to try it yet. Also what about battlefield 2... any other suggestions? Oh yah I also already own Doom 3 for the newer games and thats it... just got this pc about a month and a half ago.

Go for Either Guild Wars or World of Warcraft. Both well done RPGs.

I really enjoy GW. No subscription required (therefore better than WoW).
I think that GW is also a more fun to play. The PvP in this game is very very well done. (The makers of WoW actually paid for advice from GW makers for PvP). But the Role Playing aspect is fun as well. (and technically required if you want to unlock things for PvP...)

But WoW is a good game as well.

Where did you hear that nonsense ? Blizzard north employees left Blizz to help out the GW team out (i guess they paid more) in their networking aspects.

The reason GW is free is because its more of Diablo II then WoW. There is no massive multiplayer in GW, more then the 5man pvp (or whatever it was) in small arenas or the quests that lead you from point a to point b without ever seeing someone thats not in your party from the get go.

What pissed me off about GW is that they claimed "its not the TIME you spend in game its your "skill" and I do a " " around skill because its complete BS. The only way to get high end items and uber loot is to spend crazy time farming these closed instances and crafting with the crap that gets picked up. Don't get me wrong I did GW for about 3 months, but its repetitiveness , lack of large parties and overall "yawn" questing got to me. I rather pay 13-15$ (couple of nickles a day)/ month for an Mmorpg then 0$ and call it "a bargain".

  4. Thadian

True... but the makers of GW were contracted early on to assist WoW with their PvP.

And I guess it's a matter of opinion on the other stuff. I found that most of the time, it is skill involved in GW. However, like you said, a good deal of the trading side of things is governed by the people who farm. But that is to be expected in games that trading can be so profitable.

Let's just say when I first played WoW, I wasn't that impressed. By now, they have most likely released plenty of updates and such that would probably make it a better game. But for me (a poor college student) free and fun is still better than. Slightly more fun and costs money.

But again, I never said WoW was a bad game. Just that for now, I prefer GW.

Proof that Blizz contacted GW makers? Been in closed beta for WoW(bout year and a half ago anyways), and followed GW closely and I never heard of this. Wow by far has been the most complete mmorpg when it was released (not saying that incomplete is acceptable or fun), I had dropped WoW 4 months ago but not rerolled in it; I think that your main point is your fun is basically what burns the pocket less, altering your viewpoint.

Wouldn't necessarily say that... but for me, yeah, that does factor in a bit. I don't have much money to toss around for games (other than the once in a while buying of the game itself).

I forgot to add this into my last post.

In GW, the multiplayer PvP goes up to 8 people and the areas aren't truly that small. I don't recall the max party size in WoW, but it very well may be bigger. eh... 8 person party is fine by me. Of course the bigger parties are only available to those who either do a strictly PvP character, or those who progress through the game and reach the later arenas.

One thing I really like about GW is there is a fairly big emphasis on teamwork, both in PvP and in PvM (or PvE whatever). My first and still favorite character was my Monk. Everyone loves the monk. (if you're good... and boy, was I good :-D )

    no money. Sry. ;)

or was that to the original author of this thread. eh well...

HL2 comment meant for OP. Depending what you do in WoW, cap for max people is 40, and yes there is team work in each 5man cell, or they all die. I only played about 5 arenas in GW, they're all about the same size, with a bridge here or a gap there the biggest one I can recall is the one that had 4 pvp teams there to get a guild hall, which even that was rather small.

Most MMORPGs want team work as part of their MMO , or eles it would be a single player game. Regardless WoW is less lenient in teamwork since you can solo quests if you really wanted to, but then again you have SP games for that.

edit: sleep time (5am) i'll check on this later.

I'd have to agree with Omega here... I played GW for about three months as well and got tired of it. As for WoW, I still refuse to pay to play a game I already paid $50 for! But that's just me...

To reply to the original thread...

Half-Life 2 is a VERY cool game. As is FarCry. Played them both. Other good FPS's are Pariah and Project: Snowblind. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is great too! For a single player RPG, I'd have to go with Dungeon Siege 2. A lot like Diablo, but better!

Battlefield 2 requires a somewhat higher-end video card... Radeon X-series or GeForce 5000+ I believe (could be wrong though). I have B2 and it won't run on my over-clocked Radeon 9250LE 128mb.

The above is only MHO. ;)

hey thanks for all the great suggestions... I've been looking into hl2 for a while, but it's still 50 dollars here and if it really is only 30 dollars other places I will go with that, also it makes alot of sense now that you say WoW is only a few nickes a day maybe I should go with that, also helps to know GW is not a monthly payment, thanks very much for everyones input, anymore suggestions?

p.s. jaygee thanks again, I have a radeon x800xl should run bf2 fine.

I got bored with Far cry relatively fast, you can literaly snipe people from miles away, so the AI is stupid and doesn't do nothing. Or if your in a tower and open fire on em they all rush to that tower but dont climb it they just shoot as soon as you peak out. GTA:SA is fun.

  13. problemswithvaio

    problemswithvaio Corporal

aww really, well it is only 20 dollars around here though, I also heard the ending is great, but I will wait for the next price drop, so great I scratch far cry off the list, one less to debate, any other suggestions?

I agree with you omegamerc, i got bored with farcry for the same reasons, dont get me wrong it looks gorgeous but the gameplay does wain pretty quickly. HL2 is he only game at the mo to get, or wait for F.E.A.R the demo is amazing, but if u only got 30 bucks u may be struggling. check ebay you may get lucky.

All I want is a game that doesnt have any aliens, ghosts, zhombis, magic I dont want any lazer beems or forcefields,I want a singleplayer game that has human opponents with good tactical A.I,when I shoot them I wannt blood to come out,not green slime, one shot in the head or heart is a kill, dismemberment and ragdoll physics,OH yeh it cant be based in WW2!

My biggest annoyance about HL2 was the grenades, what happened to the timer on the grenades?now you throw them and the guys run away, for me it was the best weapon in HL along with the remote satchel charges

Rant over, sorry for spamming your thread vaio ;)

The only game that touched that specifically has been Far Cry, and that "ww3" fps (it was ww1/2 guns in ww3 scenario) and they both are crap IMO.

I didn't mean I only had 30 bucks, just that is half-life 2 is only 30 bucks in places I'm not going to spend 50 here :p

Id say go with HL2, great game by itself and then u have the online play (HL2 Death Match) as well as all the mods. We just downloaded Dystopia (through steam), cool game with a twist. When we bought HL2 we also got C.S with the package. All the Mods u can get for this game are excellent. BF2 is also tops.

I can recommend EQ2 and GTA S.A. I've played EQ2 for several months and still love it, good alternative to WOW but same price (approx.) Better graphics too.

I wouldn't buy Half-Life 2, not because it's not a great game, but because of Steam.

I won't support any company that makes legitimate customers jump through hoops, just to play a game they legally own and paid for.

Not to mention all the bugs and problems with the application.

  26. problemswithvaio

    problemswithvaio Corporal

alright one less point for half-life 2 I tried it with a stutter glitch and it was terrible :( , and also the loading times were pretty much terrible.

  27. Thadian

hmmm... well, there's always The Sims 2. :D If you liked the first Sims with it's million expansions, Sims 2 is supposed to be pretty fun. But only if you are into that kinda thing. Personally, I like it.

Oh, and have you ever played a game called Black and White? It's actually pretty fun. You are a "god" and you get this creature as a servant and you basically run a civilization (kinda). Graphics may leave a little to be desired (it's kinda old) but game play is still pretty fun. And cause it is old, you can probably find it cheap.

And Worms: Armaggedon. Or any of the worms games. Dude, it's killer worms! :) again, only if you like that kinda think.

the stutter glitch has been completely erradicated with the latest patches, its still pretty darn demanding on your system though so you may not notice the stutter has gone :)

Black and white lol,I loaded it threw all my villagers into the mountains to kill them, half way through I stabbed myself in the arm with a pen, realized that was more fun and did that for next hour,I just cant stand waiting for stuff to happen,I need to explore blow shit up and kill things :D

haha that actually made me laugh out loud... not like lol, but actually laughed... yah confusing, sounds like an interesting game just to try you said it can get kinda old though? I lost interest in the sims after a day, but I have been looking for a game where you play God, this is alot help guys anymore?

Wait for Black and white 2. Also bout the HL2 bashing, if that was true for all its customers, game wouldn't be so successful. I've installed STEAM in over 5 machines (all mine) and have had 0 problems. Studdering glitch was removed a couple of months ago (it was a looping audio bug).

  32. Insomniac

I'm not bashing Half Life 2, just Steam.

The original Steam was plagued with problems. Admittedly, it's a lot better, but it's still draconian.

What about people who don't have an Internet connection, or have download limits?

If you think Steam is a good idea, what till other companies, and not just game companies, do the same thing.

Then you will have a dozen programs loading with Windows. Enjoy! :)

There is also a button called "Thread Closed" that Administrators have when a thread starts discussing illegal practises.

I'm well aware of what's available, however, we are talking about buying games, not ways of defeating anti-piracy or copy protection.

  38. Omegamerc

    Omegamerc MajorGeek

I believe he means the emulator that emulates an internet connection. This is to bypass the "you need to be connected to the internet to play" issue for LEGIT games, as for some of us it is not possible to be online everywhere we haul our laptops.

  39. Insomniac

Insomniac Billy Ray Cyrus #1 Fan

It's still not legal, at least not in this country.

You cannot bypass any form of copy protection, whether you legally own the game.

That goes for any CD or DVD, whether it's a movie, or music disc.

That doesn't mean I agree with it, but that's the law.

  40. Omegamerc

    Omegamerc MajorGeek

Well theres a legal issue right there for Valve itself; is it legal for them to charge 50$ for a game a person can't play w/o an internet connection? Althought I believe the box does say it requires an internet connection to play but just for CS Source / CS 1.6.

  41. Insomniac

Insomniac Billy Ray Cyrus #1 Fan

It says on the box that an Internet connection is a requirement, so I can't see how anyone can claim they weren't informed or unaware.

BTW, I thought you were a fan of Steam? :p

  42. Omegamerc

    Omegamerc MajorGeek

Steam has never failed me thats all. I think the whole idea behind it blows, it originally comes from a joint venture that failed when HL1 was relatively new.

  43. Insomniac

Insomniac Billy Ray Cyrus #1 Fan

    That's fair enough.

I couldn't agree more that the idea stinks, and my main concern is that other companies adopt it.

BTW, has anyone else noticed that lately, there aren't as many decent games being made?

Apart from 3 or 4 top titles, that's all there is that are any good really?

I didn't like it, not enought FPS for me, too much RPG. You can find the first one for $10 bucks or I'll send you mine for $10.

On the HL2 / Steam issue... I belive there was a low cost, limited edition without online capability. Never seen it but I was trying to find a way to play onboard a ship w/o a internet connection and seen it refered to online.

guess that's a no for kotor which is good, because that was another one I was debating, still don't have any hardcore "no" to HL2- the steam problem, but the price is still there, and I don't wanna order online, hmm, but more ideas would be great thanks guys keep em comin :)

Well most bang for your buck you will get out of WoW (first months free by the way) since it provides almost an unlimited supply of quests / classes / mix-n-match etc, plus the communication w/others and what not. But if your more of a solo-er you should just go with HL2 game. I don't see why you don't want to buy online, only but from recommended and reputable locations like gogamer.com (been buying from them for 5 years) or newegg.com (bout the same) monarchcomputers.com / zipzoomfly.com / ebgames.com (you get charged the same price as the store though.). You can also get debit/credit cards from stores like cvs/rite-aid and what not that are one time use cards. You pay a small fee for it though.
