buzzing from power supply

I have a Compaq Presario SR100Z with an Athlon XP 3200+ processor and a GB of RAM and 2 160GB IDE hard drives. I'm getting an intermittent 'buzzing' sound coming from my power supply. It can get pretty annoying, but I'm not noticing any problems occuring with the actual computer. What's unusual is that if I bounce the front of the computer, the buzzing stops for a minute or two. I've blasted the case with compressed air, but it's not helping. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

 

The buzzing is your PS giving you a warning that it's either underpowered or dying -- Do not bang the pc as they are sensitive and bruise easily--Blasting air in the cabinet is not advised, as this can jam that piece of fuzz between a critical part and that gets expensive -- If the inerior is extremly dirty try moving the pc or enclosing your intake fan with a cover/filter.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it sounds like your PSU is ready to go South on ya! Trust me, you do not want that to happen because if it goes, it may just take some vital parts with it. It may be to your advantage to replace it as soon as possible, just be on the safe side. Honestly, I am not an alarmist, but I had one go south on me and I hate to see it happen to anyone.

 

I went on a service call a couple weeks ago to check on a buzzing sound coming from a computer. As I walked into the office, I could tell it was fan noise and walked over to it and pulled a piece of straw wrappper out of the PS fan!! LOL!!

So, first make sure it's not fan noise. If it's not, you'd probably better start shopping for a new PS.

 

what kind of psu is it? my compaq came witha puny 300w bestec, I am considering upgrading some time, especially if I ever get a 7800gt
