Bytes Sent/Received and About Buster

Hello my name is David. My computer was infected with “About Blank” hijack Malware. I read all of the required reading and performed all of the steps. Two of the programs, Ad-Aware SE Personal and Spybot removed over 100 items. I ran “Hijack this” and was able to remove a few more programs. This seemed to correct my problems as I was no longer re-directed to another Web-Site and I didn’t see the “about blank” in my Address Bar.

My computer is a Gateway Pentium II/356MHz with 385 MB of RAM. I am using Windows XP, Home Edition with Service packs one and two. Old and small but it does work. I use a dial-up connection through lakemac.net. I use Incredimail for my mail service. After recovery I noticed that my Incredimail address book, all saved messages and animation’s were gone. I also noticed that during my Internet sessions the computer would slow down a lot. My mouse was sluggish. I also saw that the Bytes Sent were very large compared to, before being infected. I read some more threads and followed one advice of downloading a program called “ewido security suite”. This found 17 items, which were removed. This seemed to take care of the “slowness” of the computer. I am still experiencing a- large Bytes sent versus Bytes Received. Example I have only been on-line for a short time and my Bytes sent are 60,913 /Bytes Received 422,843. Is this an indication that I am sending out information?

I downloaded the program “About Buster”. Every time I try to up-date the files I get a notice: “Run-time error “5”. Invalid procedure call or argument.” After I receive this message the program fails to run and I have to extract it again and start over. When I did run it (without up-dating the files) it found nothing. I tried to go to the About Buster forum and was directed to a page saying (in large letters) FORBIDDEN…GO BACK! I sent them an Email and never received an answer. Is this still a valid program? I do have my Hijack this log file. I just have a funny feeling that something else is still lurking inside my computer.

    Thank you for your advice.

    Sincerely

    David

Bytes sent will always be less then Bytes Received. Much more information is being downloaded then uploaded.

For your about:buster issue first just try setting the below option:

Control Panel -> Regional and language Settings -> Regional Otions -> Standards and Formats -> English (United States)

If this does not help, make sure you have About:Buster in its own folder with no files from anything other than about:buster in that folder. Also make sure you have curren VB6 Runtime files installed. See: Visual Basic Run Time

Hello, and thank you for answering my questions. I did as you suggested and verified that the Regional Settings were set to English (United States). I also downloaded and ran VB6- runtime files. I created a new folder for about Buster and downloaded a new copy (deleting the old files and program). When I tried to open it I received the same “Run-time” error. Do I need this file? All of the other programs worked and up-dated correctly. When I select “Safe-Mode” with Internet support, the Internet connection isn’t available. I am sure it is something I am doing wrong. My computer seems to be working as good as or better than before I was infected. Again thank you for your help. I find there are 11 types of people…binary lovers, binary haters and friends.:D

    Sincerely

    David

Skip about:buster for now. If you are using dial-up, no internet connection will be available in safe mode. If not on dial-up and you still have no internet in safe mode, it may be due to either your hardware or software for your ISP not fully functioning in safe mode. Do the online scans in normal boot (as the READ ME FIRST indicates) if you cannot run them in safe mode. The other scans do not require an internet connection and should be run in safe mode.

You're welcome! So you are saying you currently have no malware issues?

    Hello Chaslang

My computer does not appear (at this time) to have any Malware issues. I admit, I do not fully understand the HiJack This log. However, after reading a lot of the “logs” from others I was able to logically pick out and delete some lines and most of my problems were taken care of. I also read more threads and downloaded the Ewido Security Suite. This removed another 17 items. From that point on my computer has been operating as it did before the Malware issue. The only things I lost was my address book, saved messages and pictures from IncrediMail .In hopes of finding these files I have downloaded the program,” file recover”. I need to contact IncrediMail and ask them where their programs were stored so I can attempt a recovery. I will continue to read posts from this forum so I can keep current on and prevent additional Malware problems.

    Sincerely and thank you ;)

    David

You're welcome! Recovering deleted files can be tricky. Also the more stuff you install after the files are deleted, the more likely you will overwrite the area on the hard disk where the files used to be. Your best bet is to hope that the files where not actually deleted but that your program is just not linking to them properly. However, this is not a topic for this forum.
