c:\ displays instead as a W with a horizontal line thru middle of character. Character is not in ascii or extended ascii chacter set. It is simular to Ascii Extended 157 but with a W and a single line thru character. I tried the old dos rules of changing prompts but this is locked in. I.E. prompt command does noting. No drive errors in event log. It displays like this in command prompts and graphics windows like explorer. Has anyone seen this and have a possible cure ? Its also hard to search for since I'm not sure how to reproduce the chacter.

I have moved your thread to the software section as I do not believe this to me a malware issue.

You might try a screen shot so we can see what the character looks like.

Welcome to MajorGeeks by the way! :wave

It sounds like the Won sign. Is this in the cmd window?
If so, right-click on window>properties>font (choose different font).
Also you may want to check your system locale setting.

    Try the below.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

3 things, which are probably obvious, but just in case...

Have you tried one of these commands:
    Code:
    prompt
    prompt $p$g
Also, to take a screenshot, run in a console window and press Alt+Print Screen key to copy it to your clipboard. You can then paste the screenshot into your graphics program.

Have you checked your character set to be sure it is English? Some use other code pages and things to get foreign language support. I have heard of some DOS-enhancement tools using special characters/pictures instead of the prompt. Are any of these installed?
