So the internet guy came by to change the modem, and he said my signal wasn't too good. He put an inch long adaptor of some kind in between the cable and the modem.

Does anyone have any idea what that might be and what it does?

A picture would be good. Also, any words or numbers on it too.

Does your Internet work better now?

Normally, anything you put in the middle of a circuit will induce some degradation to the current flow - unless it is an "active" device. That is, it has some external power source use to power amplifiers or something similar.

A noise filter is my guess, but it would be better to eliminate the source of the noise rather than filter it.
