So my cable internet has been incredibly slow these last few days. I called out the cable guys to see if my modem had a problem, b/c they had to come out and replace it not too long ago, and he couldn't help me. He said most likely I had some kind of virus or adware/spyware, etc. He told me to get panda scan, bitdefender, and trend micro house call. I did all of those and deleted whatever it found on my computer. The trend micro never worked, the window it was in always shut down before it was complete or even near complete. I've run Ad-ware and Norton Virus scan with the most up to date virus definitions they have. Do you guys have any suggestions on what I can do? Do I need to do a Hijack thing and go from there? Any help you guys could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

This may or may not be malware related. The best way to find out is for you to please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

      • [*]runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
        [*]newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

So I did that stuff, and now my internet doesn't work at all. My roommate's computer wouldn't let her on yesterday and still won't connect at all. I ran all the scans and none of them found anything out of the ordinary. Spybot search and destroy found like 7 things and I repaired all of them.

So I'm talking to you now from a computer in the offices of our apartment complex. I don't know where to go from here, anything you guys can suggest would be amazing.

    Thanks,
    Mike

We need the logs from the scans in order to see what is really going on.

How much of the READ ME did you run? When did things break? Did you get to the online scanners?

Are you talking about TWO different computers and neither has internet access via the same cable connection? Is there a router after the cable mode?

So I took my roomate's computer to the connection in the apartment office and it works fine, leading me to believe that there is nothing wrong with our computers, but with the lines instead. I called the internet people and the tech said that I was dropping like 50% of the packets he was sending me in a test, he said that based on what he was seeing, the problem wasn't something wrong with my computer. So now I just have to get them to schedule an appointment to come out and fix it that will work with my schedule.

I think that's about all you guys can do for me from here, I appreciate the help and apologize for wasting your time.

Not a problem! That's why we are here. This is also why I was trying to understand your hardware setup a little more. I suspected a cable modem or router issue.
