    Hello MG,

I am attempting to provide ethernet functionality to a university macbook via the following adapter:

    https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Ethernet-Adapter-Supporting/dp/B00ET4KHJ2

With the adapter connected to either of the two available USB ports, and the CAT5 cable between the adapter and wall jack, the Network panel of System Preferences lists all network services as off, unplugged, or not connected.

Inside the Hardware tab of the Advanced settings for the USB 10/100 LAN network service, plugging and unplugging the adapter will cause a MAC address to appear and disappear.

Removing and re-creating this network service produces the same result. I located and installed a mac driver for this unit:

    https://www.realtek.com/en/componen...ollers-10-100m-fast-ethernet-usb-2-0-software

which has also resulted in no change.

The machine obviously sees the adapter, and any problems with the jack or cable have been ruled out. The product description specifically cites compatibility across operating systems, including OSX. What should/could I try next?

    Thanks in advance,

Note: I haven't worked on any Apple computers since 1989!

I generally look at reviews and read questions before I purchase something.

2nd question: Does it work on a Mac?
answer: It works partially. You need 3rd-party drivers, so it won't necessarily work with network boots. In addition, network login will work only once the drivers are installed.
Lastly, on my MacBook Air, I have to unplug and re-plug the USB adapter after each reboot before the OS will recognize it.

Most of the questions are from 2014. Since a lot can change in 5 years, perhaps the driver you found really doesn't work as well as it would have 5 years ago.

You might have to buy a different adapter.

    Question:
How to make it work on mac book pro . I have the appropriate adapter but is the driver required and if yes, can you give me the link to download?
Answer: this is only an adapter, its when you plug you item into this adapter i believe will drivers if needed be installed. its only a USB to RJ network port adapter. so no i do not believe this item by itself needs any drivers.

Then someone from the company responded:
Here is the link of the driver.

    This was from 2018.
