Cable Modem Help

Hey everyone. I am a newbie here and need some help. I was told this is the place to come so here I am. Anyway, I just traded out my DSL modem for a cable modem and I have a 7 Mgps plan but when I check my speed on speakeasy it ranges from a high of 6000 kbps to a low of 2050 kbps. I have tried using tcpoptimizer and did not see where it helped any. Can anyone help my figure out why my speeds are so inconsistent and tweak what I have. Thanks for your help and look forward to helping others when I can.

 

your on cable, correct? if your in a heavily populated area and you have cable, your speed might be getting sliced by your neighborhood...

 

When I spoke to my ISP they told me that everything looked good on their end and that my area is not close to capacity so I should not be worried about that. Any other ideas? Any settings I need to check or change on my computer? Thanks for the reply.

 

Your download is only as fast as the server provided the speed test and connection it has. Wouldn't worry about it, your getting about 90 percent of your speed and thats pretty good. Might try a different test site, as for me i can't seem to make speakeasy think i have the 8 meg connection that i do. I use http://www.speedtest.net/

 

I tried speedtest.net just now and it shows my download speed at 7605 kbps and my upload at 555 kbps. This is what I was wanting. Now if it will stay at this speed or close I will be very happy. I am going to test it again later today and see if it has fallen off like it does most of the time. Hopefully it will be close to the same but I will see. Thanks for the help.
