I downloaded and ran both programs last night. Now Windows won't open and it won't let me run the Windows Repair program. Computer is now useless and I'm forced to use a library's computer.

Any suggestions? Maybe a warning to other PC Windows users. I use Dell Vista, or did until it died.

What exactly do you see on screen when booting up? Where does it stop and what do you see on screen?
What do you mean "won't let me" run repair? How are you getting to repair option and what happens?

    Speaking from memory . . .

A screen comes up to say that Wndows couldn't be installed because there were errors or I'd changed something. Two things are offered - 1 to repair (recommended) and 2 open normally. Repair is highlighted and the bottom of the screen shows Enter=Choose. I hit Enter several times and nothing happened. It went onto a countdown from 30 to 1 and then started the process all over again.

I tried Open Normally and it didn't work. I restarted the PC severl times but nothing worked. I could not get further than that screen.

I'd try F8 at boot up to get to the safe mode options and try Last Known Good Configuration first.

If no go then try Safe Mode.

If no go, still from the safemode page, try Repair your Computer option. There it should find your Vista installation and you want to highlight it and hit next button to get to Advanced options. Select System Restore from the list and see if there are restore points available.

Many thanks. I've written down those instructions to try when I get home.

One problem could be the System Restore. Nucleus (my provider) tried to do that after they backed up everything but it wouldn't work. Apparently I need to buy a Dell Inspiron 531 disk. Dell won't sell me one because the warranty is out of date and they need the name of the original owner. It's a used PC. I guess I'm stuck if your suggestions don't work, until I can get enough money together to get the PC repaired or buy another used one.

I'll let you know if, by some miracle, your suggestion works.

    Thanks again.

Give it a go. Do try Last Know Good Configuration first because you only get one shot at that.

Here is a showing of the screens to get to advanced options http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html it looks like it is there after the automatic repair attempt. (figure 8) Note: your not starting from Cd so you won't get the first three screens.

You truly are an extraordinary Geek. I'm back home.

F8 and Last Known Good Configuration worked. I'll check out the link you recommended.

I can't thank you enough for your help. A first rate job. No wonder I recommend MG to everyone.

BleepingComputer found several errors and repaired 15 free. I can't afford the $99 annual fee.

I'm about to delete CAD and Ausilogics from my computer. Fingers crossed.

Glad you are at least running again.

Stay away from any registry cleaners as a general rule. They do more harm than good.

Also create a Restore point now while things are working.

Start>Type in System Protection and choose Create a Restore Point.

    Thank you again.

I'll stay away from those programs in future. I know something is wrong with my OS but those programs won't help, as I've learned.

I'll create a Restore Point today, but I'll keep keeping my finger crossed.

    I appreciate all your help.
