My question has to do with applications, or other files "calling home." Accessing the net on their own? Simply, what file suffixes, am I saying that right, such as .exe, .dll etc, are able to connect to the internet on their own, or when I open an application? Thanks a lot. I looked in archives, but if there is already a post somewhere SORRY!

Basically anything that can be executed can cause this so the answer is not so straight forward since there are many files that run like a program. You named EXE and DLL. But even the following could require access to the internet. (and this is not necessarily all inclusive since there are literally thousands of file extensions with new ones appearing all the time. See: http://filext.com/ )

    .api
    .apl
    .bin
    .com
    .crl
    .dat
    .dco
    .ecd
    .exc
    .msi
    .ocx
    .scr
    .tmp
    .vbs

And some files that are programs (like .bat files) could call other programs which intern could access the internet to.
