Heheheh.... I'm one of you now.

Yeah, while I was AFK, I bought a house and am loving it. Of course, it's quite a change to actually be the one I have to call when something needs fixing... hehe. But I like it. It's nice to know that I have something that is actually mine.

Granted, there have been a few things...

    1) came with a nice hot tub... that we can't use. Found out that the previous owners had it illegally here. Need to have a butt load of permits to have it, so it sits the the basement room empty and forlorn... so I'm trying to sell it on Cragslist... heheh

    2) need a new refrigerator... that was the first thing to go.... ah well, the freezer is working like the frige and I have a HUGE chest freezer in the basement so we're getting by for now.

    3) have to replace the floor in the second bathroom... long story short, it's handicap accessible and the floor got wet from the shower all the time and needs to be replaced.

    4) did I mention I LOVE OWNING MY OWN HOME!!! I get to do projects now :)

Any other homeowners got stories to share??

    Very cool, CT. Congrats!

The not being able to call someone else when something goes wrong really sucks, but the owning your own far outweighs that.

The one thing I've learned owning a house is that things break down in threes. :(

BUT, you can do anything you want to it and all that money you are putting into your mortgage is actually going towards something that you can get back if you sell (at least the principle). :)

Congrats Calltaker :wave That is great! I know one thing, by the time you get it paid for, you will have done LOTS of repairs! :-D We gutted ours, and started from the inside out.. Man, we tore out walls, and insulated, and put in knotty pine thru-out the whole house, , and cedar in the master bedroom. One thing for sure, if you make a mistake, you can always toss it in the wood burner!

We had to have the house jacked up, a new foundation put under it, and after doing the inside, we went to work on vinyl siding the outside. NO MORE PAINTING!!! :celebrate

Hey, it was all fun, and we had a blast. I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.. But, it is ours, and we can do what we want, and it is a good feeling owning one.. Cheers :wine

Hey Ct like all home owners you'll find it's like the Forth Bridge as we say here in the UK, or if your in the USA the San Francisco Bridge you'll start painting it at one end but by the time you get to the other end you'll have to start again ! :-D Basiclly thats how its always been and thats how it always will be i'm sorry to say ! Happy painting buddy ! :-D

Our house was built in 2005. the previous owners over-spent and the bank was going to fore-close on them so we got it dirt cheap. Yay recession, we could never have bought our house without you! :highfive

On the evening of July 1st of this year, the A/C stopped working. We live in a mountain desert, so all of a sudden it was 85 degrees in our house... YUCK! Since none of us was home the 2nd it wasn't a big deal... until we got home from work. We left again and purchased a few of those oscillating fans, and ran all our ceiling fans on max over night. It still wasn't tolerable.

On Friday July 3rd I went in to work. The Guy had the day off to attend a funeral, so was not too eager to stick around afterwards, and went home again. Since he had the whole day off and none of his friends did, he couldn't go to their houses, and he of course refused to go in to work. Good luck finding an A/C repair tech the Friday before a major holiday...! He called me on my lunch to tell me he'd get us a hotel room over the weekend, and make appointments to repair the A/C after the holiday.

I came home from work, mentally prepared to pack my things, and was met in the door by an extremely smug-looking husband. He declared that there was no need to pack, because he had fixed the A/C.

Sure enough. Wonderful, beautiful, glorious cold air was coming out of all the vents, and the house was already below 80 degrees!

He then showed me the two large steaks he had gone out and purchased and put in the fridge, and told me that since he had fixed the A/C, I should now make him a steak dinner. I didn't argue. I grilled the steaks. :)

Hey CT. Congrats. It's a great feeling to buy your own house. We liquidated everything to get our house 18 years ago, and thanks to the bi-weekly payment plan it's paid for in January, so let the major reno's begin. New windows, including bay windows in the living room and kitchen, siding (I've painted the exterior once, never again), driveway, doors, retaining walls, fencing, all new kitchen and upstairs bathroom. Already did the basement bathroom. New electrical service, 200amp, (we only have 60) and rewiring to get the place up to todays code.
I'm a bit of a handyman so I can do everything myself except install the service to the house, and pave the driveway. I also paid a guy to do the roof a few years ago. That's hard backbreaking work. Somethings are worth paying for.
Usually after I finish a repair or project around the house I mention to my wife how much money I saved her by being so handy. This often results in several minutes of pretend gratitude;). Hey, I'll take it.

That's just great CT now just keep repeating this every day you live there
and you may not sell before the next few years.:-D

So you went out and did the same thing we did. You bought someone else's head aches. That's what we did,but like you it was OUR head ache.(and boy is that head ache getting bigger:cry)jk
I'm very happy for you CT. It is a nice feeling to have a piece of the pie isn't it?;)
    Happy Living.:)

Hmm, from looking at the posts it would seem that YOU never own the house, rather IT owns you.;)

    Congratulations CT

Owning a home is like money in the bank (except the profit is all yours)

I am now on my fifth and last home (unless she who must be obeyed want to live in Spain or Key west)
Each move we have made was to a bigger house untill the last one (just a year ago) when we bought an apartment and that allowed us to have a good bank balance which leaves cash for my toys.
Owning is a long term investment and also gives you a great credit rating (if you need it) and at the end of the month you don't get the landlord knocking on the door.

I've pretty much owned since 1972. Back then there were no discrimination laws and trying to find a place that accepted children was nearly impossible.

Welcome to the world of money pits ;) It's good though :)

You are correct.........There is no feeling quite like owning your own piece of real estate and home. Yes, you DO have to do little things like repairs, mowing, etc., but the good feelings you get make it worth it all.
And........down the road, you can always sell it for a profit and move up.

Now, doesn't that make you glad you're a republican??? j/k
(don't want to get into that political claptrap)

    Congrats.:cool

THank you all... I honestly had been getting to the point where I never thought it would happen, then I sat down and actually looked at the numbers. We had to get out of the pit we were in, and when I realized that the mortgage with all the bills was still about $100 a month less than just the rent we were looking at having to pay.... well, it just made sense to buy.

Not that things aren't a little tight right now, but I have a home, not just a place to live. On top of which, I have a car port (OK, not the garage I wanted, but I won't have to brush snow off the car every day this winter :))

I'm fairly handy, but it takes $$ to do some things, and a normal schedule at some point... the neighbors get a little annoyed when you're hammering away at 3am.... hoping to move off the night schedule soon.

I'll have to get around to taking some pics and posting.... we're having fun getting it set up though... been in for a couple months and it still feels like we're just moving in... LOL

Sorry, I'm gushing now, but it really is a great feeling.

Glad you finally got a place to call your own. C.T. Guess this means you've finally got to move out of the 'hood';). At least any work you do on the place will be on your OWN home. Gongrats, man!)
