Hey guys and gals, I used to be a lurker on here for quite some time but have just registered today. The thing is, I am thinking of starting up a YouTube channel as I have really wanted to for a while now but somehow lack the confidence to talk in front of a camera and project my voice. When I know the camera is recording I instantly get filled with a weird sense of embarrassment and start to mumble and this comes across quite prominently on the video. I also don't like the sound of my own voice when it's picked up by a microphone (blue Yetti). What software applications are available that will improve this and make it sound less horrible?? lol

I am wondering if there are any YouTubers (all public speakers) in this forum who have already overcome this problem and would be extremely grateful for some.... well... sound advice (pardon the pun).

    Thanks in advance
    Richard

    Hi Richard

Welcome to the forum and glad you now joined as that is a 1st positive step as while silent typing on a forum you have voiced through text! TBH public speaking is a difficult thing at times, I work in medicine (NHS and research) so need to present not only patient cases (have to talk to patients and relatives in clinic also) but presentations, and I hate large groups but not so bad with <10 in a group. Sadly no app will change your accent or voice (some may enhance a little but change no) so the best thing I would say is to practice the video and text with friends and family so that you get used to it, the more you practice the more comfortable you become and being comfortable makes a presentation seem casual and that then shows you more relaxed and any presentation if relaxed is much better.

Also when I started to present patient cases at a weekly meeting we have back in 2005 I was nervous as hell and mumbled and made mistakes, but know what, once you make a "TIT"of yourself a few times, you get over it and then its effortless, now I can hold my own with the consultants and most times they ask my opinion, I now see the junior docs flounder. Also have look over some of the guides here and listen to Major Attitude (Tim aka co-owner of Majorgeeks) and his guide text http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index.php?forums/latest-videos-from-majorgeeks-youtube-channel.33/ as they may give you some idea on how someone sounds.

Dont worry too much as I guess your youtube videos will be good.

Check out the resources and tips on Toastmasters site here: http://www.toastmasters.org/
Toastmasters provide a great opportunity to develop your speaking ability and to help others do so, as well.
Sir Michael Caine's book, "Acting in Film," is useful for when you are before the camera, here: http://www.michaelcaine.com/Books
You might get involved with community theater. Small parts at first with limited or no line load, just so you can gain comfort.

Always think of your audience. Ask yourself "why are they there and why are they listening to you?" Prepare to give them what they want.
Then give it to them. Preparation has the benefit of knowing what you are going to say, so you can fluidly and smoothly deliver the goods
without long pauses, many "uh ... uh", and "ya know", spread throughout your delivery. These time-fill delays just waste time and isn't what your audience wants to hear, anyway. Know what your message is trying to do ... sell 'em, convince, inform, report, etc.

Like DavidGP says, "practice." A technique, some actors use, is to practice their delivery to a mirror. Be enthusiastic. Believe in what you are saying. Keep the energy up. Yet, don't get carried away. You don't want to detract from your message with too much exuberance, unless you are
doing an ad lib or impromtu, where a few laughs can be useful. Also, what DavidGP said about casual and relaxed. Confidence comes from just
doing it more and more. Tim exudes plenty of confidence in his videos; probably 'cuz he makes alot of them.
