I have a Compaq Presario 2175US with Windows Professional XP installed. While relentlessly removing some spyware references in the registry I inadvertently deleted the above title. This has made it impossible to install some, but not all, software. When software can not be installed an error message appears to the effect that CallWindowProMF could not be found in user32.dll. Would someone kindly copy and paste the results of a registry search for CallWindowProMF to a reply, so I can rebuild this portion of the registry. Attempts at restoring the registry to an earlier date have not succeeded to an early enough date. Your help would be greatly appreciated. I'm folding for Major Geeks, so think of me as a brother. :)

By the way, would somebody please tell me where to find a Quick Reply icon in the original message? Thanks.

That is why it is so important to back up your registry; before attempting to manually edit. Changes to the registry are final, if you make a mistake there is no going back, unless you have a backup copy of your registry.

Did a search of my registry and have nothing called CallWindowProMF in it sorry, also did a search of the net for it and nada.

I would be very tempted to run system file checker,

Start > Run and in the box type sfc /scannow which will check for any missing or corrupt system files ( you will need your XP cd and you may also have to re-install service packs and updates again )

Thank you for your reply. I believe the problem is in user32.dll. Can you send me a copy for Windows XP?

Thats not a file, thats a function call(dunno if thats the correct term) for user32.dll.

Unless you can tell us what version your user32.dll file, what service pack you are running, etc, nobody can provide very specific help.

Thank you for your reply. I can tell you that I have XP Pro with Service Pack 2. Installing software is not always a problem...it must depend on the software. I've been wanting to install one program that invokes the error message re CallWindowProMF, and another invokes DefWindowProMF, neither of which could be found in user32.dll. Any ideas?

What version is your user32.dll file?

Right click it, go to properties. There is a version tab.

I seem to have two versions of user32.dll. In C:\Windows\system32 the version created 8/28/02 and modified 2/2/05 is 5.1.2600.2622. In C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 the version created 8/24/96 and modified 10/07/05 is 4.0.0.950. I recently replaced the latter with a copy I downloaded from some Web site. I thought I replaced both .dlls with the same copy.

In C:\i386 is user32.DL_, created 8/29/02 and modified the same day. There's no version number, but I never touched that file.
