7MP denotes the number of pixels in the shot.

You work this out by multiplying the number of vertical pixels by the number of horizontal pixels.

    A 3MP camera has 2, 048 x 1,536 = 3,145,728 pixels

    Your 7MP camera probably has a resolution of 3056 x 2296 = 7,016,576 pixels.

In essence this just means the picture is bigger on a computer screen, which in turn means the photo contains more detail.

No. This means that your camera can caprture upto approximately 7 million pixels per picture your maximum resolution is 3072 x 2304 per picture.

When looking at an image on screen you cant use a "per inch" measure as you can zoom in and outso your image resolution will change. The "per inch" only becomes relevant (in image quality terms) when you print and that depends on the size of your print out.

    e.g.
if you take a picture on your 7MP camera and print it on a piece of paper that is 30cmx23cm your resolution will be approx 100x100 (per centemeter)= 10000dpc (dots per cm) approx 4000dpi.

if you print the image on a piece of paper that is 15cm x 11.5cm the your resolution will be 200x200 (per centemeter) = 40000dpc or 16000dpi

in other words if you half the image size then you get double the quality but obviously the image is half as big.

The MP of the camera really only relates to the maximum size that you can print the picture at. There are other factors that effect the picture quality other than the resolution. If you only want to print standard size pictures get an expensive 5MP camera rather than a cheap 10MP camera.

Shops often sell cameras based on a high MP rating which is missleading.
