A couple weeks ago we had a power outage, no bid deal, we live sort-of out in the country and it happens often. The problem is after this one my sons computer will not come back on. The power comes back, but windows (XP) will not start. I tried in safe mode and last known good configuration several times but still nothing. I'm on roadrunner and my PC is the main one with his on the wireless upstairs. I don't think that makes any difference as far as this problem but throwing it out there in case.

Advice sincerely appreciated, as it gets him off mine,

Sort of sounds funny. Maybe the HD got a little messed up from the improper shutdown. Since it seems to be booting and getting to the boot menu, about all I can suggest is, boot off the xp cd and try to do a repair of the current install.

If that doesn't work, reinstalling should also help. Although it may be the HD itself is actually damaged.

You mentioned that he is on the wireless upstairs, have you checked to make sure there is nothing wrong with that??? Other than that, a clean reinstall would be your best bet.
