Can Anyone Help Diagnose This Seagate External Hd?

Hi,

New here - hello! So, i have taken the plunge and fully opened up my Seagate Barracuda 2TB External HD. It is making some strange noises and i was curious as to what was going on inside.

I have made a video of power up with the case fully off:



As you can see the arm goes across, but then the spindle appears to lose power completely and i am left with a blue flashing light and a drive which isn't read by my PC.

I would be so grateful if someone could shed some light on what i'm sure is a fairly common problem, particularly with Seagate drives it seems!

It looks and sounds to me like the controller chip on the drive's PC board has failed. I noticed that the read/write head didn't go to the boot sector first. Instead, it went somewhere toward the middle of the drive first then briefly to a couple of other areas. It's also quite loud.

Hope you didn't have any valuable data on the drive. You may be looking at taking it to a data recovery center capable of forensics.

 

Oh god. Are Seagate drives really that bad? I had to settle for a Seagate recently because my local store was all out of WD and I couldn't wait because my other drive that I had to copy from was on the verge of total failure. I haven't had any problems with the Seagate drive as yet but it's only been a month or two. Should I think about buying a WD as well?

Mine's only a 2 TB drive. Hope that makes some kind of a difference.

EDIT: Ah ****, no. The thread starter's drive's a 2 TB one as well. I can't remember whether mine's a Barracuda though.

 

The same could have happened with a WD Green series drive. The WD Blue series is better and the WD Black series are the best WD drives.
