Can anyone help me set up my router so people in my house (and anywhere else) cannot access it??

I've tried reading up on it but I'm seriously clueless when it comes to that stuff about WEP..hex keys...ect...
I tried going to the webpage http://192.168.0.1 and using the wizards on there...it seems to set up....I choose WEP & it gives me some long number but after I submit,,,,I can't connect to the internet anymore and my computer is hard wired to router/cable modem!?

I try typing in that long number it gave me during setup but it ALWAYS tells me its wrong but how can it be wrong if I copy/paste it??:confused

My computer skills are decent but not when it comes to internet setup & wireless.:confused

I would just like it if my desktop (the one connected to router) & my laptop could could connect without allowing the rest of the world in. I struggle to afford my cable so I'd prefer to have sole use of it if possible. :ban
PLEASE help if you can? :(

Your wireless settings shouldn't mess with your wired settings. Could you get on the internet through the hardwired computer before changing the settings? Can you still access 192.168.0.1?

Yes I could get on before & even when I can't access internet it still lets me access router page so I just remove security & reset modem to get access again.

When I set up WEP I try access with my Nintendo DS & It asks for a WEP key ..........so I type the long number I got & always says its wrong. I have never had success with those keys for some reason.......its just strange & frustrating

Ok, since you reset, all we have to do is set up the wireless security.

Access your router's interface through the browser. Under the setup tab, click the wireless settings tab at the left. Then click the bottom button that says "Manual Wireless Network Setup". Chang the following settings only:
Wireless Network Name: Whatever you want it to be
    Security Mode: WPA-Personal
    WPA Mode: WPA only
    Cipher Type: TKIP
Pre Shared Key: any 8-64 password you want... I use one of my old cell-phone #'s.

Click save settings at the top, and you should be in business.

Those settings should work well on XP and keep all but the extremely determined out.

Oh, DS doesn't support WPA I don't think... I wasn't including that in the mix.

If you need access with your DS try these settings:

Wireless Network Name: Whatever you want it to be
    Security Mode: WEP
    WEP Key Length: 64 Bits
    WEP Key 1: a 10 digit passphrase

WEP is not as secure as WPA, and 802.11n doesn't work with it, so your router will fall back to 802.11g/b if you switch it to WEP. But it still shouldn't give you too much trouble.

I actually just went to the dlink website & they had a setup program to configure router for you so I downloaded it & setup for WEP security..it gave me a 10 digit key. It has two zeros in key which I'm assuming are zeros but O didn't work either.

I can use my PC on internet now but DS still says no.
My DS can see the router & asks for WEP key (before security, DS connected fine) but now I type key in & it says cannot access.

I was trying with my game "Clubhouse Games" to connect & also tried Mario Luigi game.

    OK I figured it out....
Apparantly I had something called "MAC Filtering" on & I had to add the DS's MAC address to my router configuration.
    Now it connects! :cloud9

Sorry to be a pain,,,,,I normally do more research before asking for help but I've been feeling a bit stressed lately.
In any case, Thank you for responding....I appreciate it a bunch! :)
