Can anyone make a sucessful website? Is having a business website for the sake of it and writing it yourself better than getting a professional company to do it for you?

Does designing a website require skill?

    Discuss ;)

this is a little research for an article I'm writing at the moment

I guess, in theory, yes, anyone 'could' make a website.
I still voted no for practicality

Anyone can create a website. HTML and CSS requires a basic mathematic skill, so yeah, anyone can if they have free time. Programming with C++, however, is a different story. ;)

When I answered I thought more on web design than just creating a website. So thats why i want with No, not everyone can. Because like what was said, anyone can flop down some text and call it a website. But too design one from scratch, and come up with the layout, takes thought and time. I like to think of it as a small artistic ability since really what you are doing is creating something from your imagination. Something unique and different. That takes skill.

With programs like Frontpage, just about anyone could design a website. Running a successful one on the other hand is a more difficult. It takes skill to know what to put out there to attract the public to your site.

Voted no cause it does take skill to make one from scratch. Have made a few just for the fun of it, and to see if I could, with tools provided and some knowledge of html.

I think for a business though a professional approach would be better, unless you are some kind of website building wiz......

Anyone CAN make a website. However, 99.9% of people who make web sites should NOT, including about 80% of the "professionals" who do it for pay.

And anyone who uses Flash should be dragged behind a horse for 10 miles, then covered with honey and staked out over a fire ant hill. ;)

    From the horses mouth.

Yes anyone can make a website.

There are probably hundreds of sites out there that will give you a small amount of space to create a web site. Not just a page, but a multipage site. I know, because over the years, I've done several. They were all free, and the site provided and HTML Builder utility. Basically, just a bunch of templates.

I've probably made 5 or 6 sites and about 15 different pages this way. NONE of them were successful in any way. I believe this is due to having to pay to have your site listed with search engines.

And by the way I know almost nothing about HTML programming or any of that other stuff.:)

I'd like to "play around at this", which one of the 'hundreds' would you say is the best to do this?
    thanx :)

Anyone CAN make a website, the same way anyone can make a painting.

But the qualityof those websites will range from the level of kindergarden fingerpainting to Monet and Michaelangelo. And the porportion of quality will be about the same spread. ;)

The question is a successful website, correct?

As in real estate, where you're advised "location, location, location", for a successful website it has to be "content, content, content".

Flash animation intros (skip!), CSS, cool graphics don't mean crap unless the content is there-- captivating, interesting, and dynamic-- whether it be commercial or informational: get their interest, keep their interest, and keep them coming back for more.

Well, take it for what its worth, but this is how I see it:
If a certain company wanted a "real" website (in that they wanted to take some payment across the 'Net, run some cgi bins, you know, update it often, maybe daily), then they would want someone who was dedicated to do this job.

In other words, in my mind (as an outsider to the "website" scene and to the business world) I would think that the maintainance of the site would be of greatest concern, more far reaching than the concern of the initial composition, if you will.

A static site, that will not be updated, not take payments, you know, you can't post to it, or anything?

Yeah, that's child's play. Anybody can do it. (Mr. Pewty you are TOO funny!)
    :D

But, in today's business world, it seems like everything has got to be flashy
(no pun intended). You know, fancy.

Dang those people with their bandwidth hogging crap they load onto their pages!!!

Kinda depends on what question you're asking:

Can anyone make a website? - Yes

Can anyone make a succesfull website? - No

and don't forget, Should Someone make a website? Depends. Runeclans.com kept my interest for a much shorter amount of time than it took to click the big red X.

To add to TheDoug's comments on a sucessful website - it also takes design skill. A web site may contain the words to get your point across but no style (on page and in navigation) that keeps the visitor reading and coming back.

Also add advertising - getting the word out. A good web site is nothing without visitors.

Anyone can make a web site - but a good web site takes skill.
