Im 16 and i've suffered from cronic migraines for a few years now and it sucks I currently have one and yes I am getting on the computer after im done this post Lol but yeah my mom quit being a pastor so no health care for now and that means no medications I normally just take a hot steamy shower and let hot water run on my neck to get rid of my migraine but that is becoming more difficult. Any over the counter meds don't help me anymore they lost their affect but im just wondering does anyone know of a good way to get rid of a migraine without taking any medications? I would very much like to hear any ideas because I do everything I can to prevent em but theres always a few that get you by supprise and I need something to bail me out when I get them.

    Thanks in advance!

Stop clenching your teeth/jaw ......there are over the counter migrane meds ...but have found that a cup of strong coffee can help ....quiet/dark room and prone with a warm rag behind the neck ...some say a cold rag ....and let your mind float .don't try to focus on anything. Best of luck.

I would like to add to Tim's drinking coffee that you also inhale the coffee while it is steamy hot...cup your hands around a mug of it and inhale through your nose...out through your mouth. It helps my migraines if caught early enough, together with drinking the coffee, a hot shower and 2 inbuprofen. If you don't do all this till after the "light show" it probably won't be effective and you'll need the prescription stuff.

I can relate to you man.

Are you sure you have a migraine?

My wife has headaches that never go away, they started a few yrs ago, after countless Doctor visits with dozens of doctors & specialists, a MRI spotted a Aneurysm, Brain surgery fixed the Aneurysm two yrs ago but the headaches are still here.
She now goes to The Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago where they can only try to help her manage them, they say there is no cure for her chronic headaches, the type of headaches she has affects aprox 4% of the worlds population
I just want to add my wifes headaches are not Migraine but they were misdiagnosed as such but they are still so similar

    Avoid Caffeine
Avoid smoking or second hand smoke
Avoid Peanut based food products, like peanut butter.
The above three things are known to promote headaches

Many medications after long term use will cause rebound headaches, especially Narcotic based meds.

Im a Green Tea fanatic. Quit coffee. It's bad for you, unless you like liver problems and pooping and being high on caffeine until you crash. Similar buzz, comes down easier and if it does NOT work, its good for you. Look for China Green Tips, sold by the Tazo brand at Starbucks or most major grocery stores. They have other brands with a lemon or herbal twist you might like, I am a green tea purist myself, no extra crap in it for me. I drink a carafe +1 every day. Herbe Mante tea is supposed to be even better, but I hate the taste, you might not. Again, less buzz, less crash with it, even better anti oxidants. This ASSUMES you like tea at all, some tea drinkers dont like the green (and other) teas and vice versa.

Hot showers work for you? I would look into (if possible) a hottub or sauna. Hot tubs small around 2,500 a 1 man sauna about the same. Just dont fall back on medications, they MASK the problem, stick to it until you FIND the problem. I dont even take cold meds because I want to know where I am at. I had a sore throat today, wife said to take some airborne (a pre cold stopper) and I refused. Throat pain is gone, at least I know it. I have chronic back pain I am stuck with for life and take MAYBE 2 pills a month, tops. Im big on this theory, meds are for extreme cases.

Thats my 2 cents. Best wishes to you, I can relate to the pain.

I agree ........ a lot of pain has to be worked through, not masked. But there is a time for medication too.

Just wanted to clarify my point on coffee after reading MA's post. Large quantities of coffee will add to headache pain, whatever the cause. I was literally suggesting one cup of coffee, and not to be taken late in the day,or you may have sleep issues which will lead to tiredness and then more headaches.

Green tea is great - love it, but also some of the other herbal fruit teas are good if green tea isn't to your taste. Just check they are caffeine-free.

If you like iced tea, cut down on the caffeine, by making it 50% regular tea and 50% green tea. Regular tea actually contains more caffeine than coffee.

A trick I learned from a Chinese Doctor, is take your thumb and forefinger and grab the meaty muscle between the thumb and forefinger of the other hand and squeeze and massage this area as hard as you can, the more pain felt the faster the headache will go away. Do this to the other hand as well. Apartly this pressure point between the thumb and forefinger is tied to an area in the brain that causes headaches. I have done this for numerous people and it always works, kinda hard to discribe so if your having problems PM me here and I will get back to you.

Theres also a vein in your neck my mom's Chinese Doctor told her about and its a pain to find but if you pinch it for about 30 seconds it helps with the pain a lot.
