can connect wireless at home but nowhere else

I have an HP laptop running XP with all service packs current and am able to connect thru wireless secure router at home perfectly fine but I can not connect to any non secured free hot spots. What happens is once i select the public access it seems to connect but upon opening any browser I get unable to connect. So I check the connection and it shows a good connect between my laptop to the router but has a red X between the router and the internet. O feel this maybe a very simple solution. Thank you for any assistance

 

Firewall software would be the first thing I would be looking at. What Internet security software are you using, and do you have a Proxy setup through Internet Explorer, or on the machine, that you use at home?
