If yes, what software do I need? Thanks.

No expert here, but it depends what you want to do with the audio files. The audio files can be saved like any other data file and can be played from the cd location using what ever program the specific file needs. Again same as any other data file and its associated program. But you probably can't play ia CD like this in your CD player in the car.

I should have mentioned that I'm looking at backing up some data files and some audio files, so I thought maybe I could do it on the same CD or DVD. Not expecting to "play" the disk on a CD or DVD player.

Yes, you can. Just use the backup software to backup data. Data can be anything, from pictures, music, or anything stored on the hdd. :)

I guess my computer is not set up to use Windows Backup. I get messages that removable storage is not configured...or something like that. So I decided to just put the stuff I want to back up on a flash drive. It's simpler, too. I'm a bit slow in figuring out stuff. Thanks for your reply.

Do you want to burn a CD that plays on your CD player and acts as a cd-rom when you insert it to your PC? This can be done too. It's called a CD EXTRA and contains a data track and an audio track. You should be able to burn it with most cd burning software.

I checked out CD Extra; my Sonic Lite burning software does not have it.
As for send-to, when I tried it, I got a message saying drive D (my CD/DVD drive) "is not accessible; incorrect function."
