Does this sound fair to y'all? first the story. A friend had me take her to work for awhile and she just paid the gas and it started to wear my truck to much to keep doing it so i had to stop for awhile and now it turns out i am her last chance to keep the job because she has no car and she can't get a car because she has no ID to drive one because she lost it (DUIs) Shes trying to set things right straiten out her life so she can keep her kids and shes gotten away from drinking and drugs. So on Friday she asked if i could take her to work and i said alright just this once and well when i went to pick her back up she said her boss wanted to talk to me so i went to speak with her and she wanted to know how much a week or month to bring her to work and back everyday. So i said alright i will give her a price Monday but in my head i was thinking she can't afford the cost of how far and having to do it twice a day because i got to come back to the house because thats where i do 99% of my work and the wear and tear on the poor old P'UP plus the 2 hours for each trip hour there hour back twice a day going through Warner Robins takes allot of time.. Also this is just temp until she gets her Drivers License back.

This sound alright its the cheapest i think i could do it. Because my truck is the only thing that can pull off that many miles that cheap the Dodge gets 13MPG and the Explorer gets only 17MPG while the P'UP gets maybe around 25MPG the long shot from Hawkinsville to Warner Robins its good on the gas but once i hit Warner Robins and have to drive 10miles through the city stop and go it just sucks down the gas. I don't mind doing it for her because when i need help she helps and same if she needs it and i just love being on the road thats why i am going to get my CDL:-D I think if they go for that i will try it afew days in the Dodge Durango to see if it can do it better then the P'UP because EFI should be better than a Carburetor in the city :confused but yet a 5.9L VS a 2.3L.rolleyes

I'm sure i am over looking something maybe y'all will point it out to me

$250 a week with wear and tear on the truck ( oil and transmission fluid) sounds fair NJ but that does not factor in your time of 4hrs per day travelling, i know you said she is a friend and i understand that you want to help but other things must be taken into account.

i don't know what minimum wage is in the US but if you gave yourself $10 per hour that bumps it to $450 a week.

How did you come up with $250? or was that a typo? I don't know what minimum wage is here myself. I think its around $7-10. I really doubt she can handle how much i came up with unless the boss knows a way where the work would pay for it.

The heat is about to kill me today it hit 101F and my ac is not cooling right. because it needs a O-Ring in the condenser causing it to leak.

i just allowed for oil and transmission fluid and other unknown costs you will incur doing 860 miles a week.

i realise that it is a high cost but you must look at this as a service and not a gift (hope that does not sound callous ) but i have run a transport firm of my own and certain costs are not always immediately visible (tyres - insurance -oils-service) these are all costs that you must bear and not your friend.

If you want a real insight to the costs call a local taxi firm and ask how much for the job, i think you will get a shock.

I had a look at the map and you are in the middle of nowhere i see the nearest rail link is also a long way at ELKO or EMPIRE is the bus an option for your friend?

I am really sorry to pour cold water on this but another thing has just occurred to me.

In the UK and Belgium if you receive payment for any service you are required to have third party insurance for example if you have an accident (god forbid) and your friend is injured you are responsible for medical costs and this is not normally covered by your general insurance if they can prove that you have received payment.

The US Government computes mileage rates at $0.485 per mile, from the 2007 Joint Federal Travel Regulation. I used to do travel coordination for my former unit. The mileage reimbursement rates may be higher this year.

    So, 860 miles/wk at $0.485/mile is $417.10/wk.

Goverment milage rates account for fuel costs and vehicle wear and tear.

EDIT: The 2008 JFTR Mileage rate is $0.505/mile. So, it would be $434.30/wk

Just my two cents here. If this much is being charged for gas, it is even worth it for her to work? I barely make that much a week for wages, so I know for me, I couldn't pay that.

Shadow's right, I worked for the census, last year it was .485 cents/mile, this year .505, but we also were paid travel time at our normal wage. So, it depends if you want to help her and break even, or make a buck in the process.
If her boss is willing to pay for it, which means she must be valuable, then it won't be costing your friend. Figure up a price you are happy with, but leave yourself some room to dicker, afterall there is no sense in aiming low, giving her the price, and having her say "sure, that's cheap", leaving you feeling like a fool;)

As Bill pointed out, can she take a bus for part of the trip? Also, before you give a total, figure up what you want for your time and wear and tear on the car, and figure your gas payment in gallons. Say you get $150 a week plus 20 gallons of fuel. That way if gas goes WAY up this summer, you don't lose money.

Conversely, if gas goes down this summer :)-D yeah, right) they will pay less.

Thats what i keep hearing that is gas keeps going up it would not be worth it to work and that alot of people will just stop working because of gas costing more then what they are making.

Nope no bus there was one she rode for the first 6 months because the gov paid for it but when that ended she could not afford to pay for it. What i find stupid is that same bus (17seater dodge transport van) comes to our town to pick up one person and take them to the same office as my friend yet my friend can't just get a lift every other day.rolleyes

First thing when i get there is to ask whos paying the work or my friend.

Thats why i am always saying i live in the middle of nowhere lol :-D I don't know what the laws are around here so i could not tell you if its the same here.;)

I once lived 20 miles from work and lost my drivers license, had to take a taxi.
I found it cheaper and convenient to move to a new place 4 blocks from work and I walked.

I would look at it as an insurance company would. I have rental insurance, in case something happens, and I need a vehicle.

My insurance company pays $30 a day for me to have a car, and I would pay for the gas above that. You could look at having the employer get you a rental car until she has hers. You might end up with something small, I had a Nissan Sentra. They're going to double your gas mileage, and in the long run, might save some money for someone. You'll pick it up with a full tank to begin with, and the employer could rent it per week.
