ah I was wondering what it was for a second, I've seen this before. its actually very very cool. It sounds like a violin or a viola or something close to that. Not sure I would want one near my computer.

First I've ever heard of it. Pretty cool. My son is into playing music, have to show him this. Wish there was a site that gave a sample of the music.

    :D

And NN, by keyboard, I meant my Yamaha keyboard, not my PC keyboard :p What with it being a musical instrument and all ;)

ah, well why bother with the keyboard, half the fun is playing it with your hands.

Cause I don't have 3 hands, so I can't play a Major chord with theremins? :p I guess I could use a leg, but blimey...

I believe The Beach Boys used one on "Good Vibrations" .
It's the instrument that makes the sound at the beginning of the song

    Evidently not!

"Tannerin" sure sounds like the inventor had to have heard of a Theremin before, though, no? I always thinks of the old horror movies, back when they were just called "scary movies", when I hear the Theremin referred to.

Oh, I remember something like that (tannerins)-- you could actually buy consumer versions of something similar that had the wired probe you rubbed across the metal plate "keyboard" to produce musical notes. What I remember didn't quite sound like Good Vibrations, though-- more like an old Atari.

Thanks Goldfish. Doug, your right. That is when they were used.

When I was doing my christmas shopping a few weeks ago, there was some guy who was playing one of these and had it hooked up to a cd player and speakers and was using it to make really weird music but the sound was great, just thought I'd mention that.

I was thinking of buying one of those for the school music competition :p last year we did eine Kleine Nachtmusik on 2 kazoos... :D

    OMG i bought one.

    *screams*

Actually, I bought a kit, and I'm going to replace the aerial with somthing more substancial (a plastic coated car aerial, to be precise), and I'm going to fashion a box to put it in.

Heh, I've already got a rack to plug it into, should be immense :p

Don't go overboard on the antenna, or you may have to stand down the block to control it. ;)

Its got a gain control thing on it, hopefully that means I wont be making aeroplanes fall out of the air or have to play it with a pickaxe or somthing :p

I used to build those Thermin thingies when I was a teenager, 30 or so <cough!> years ago!

    Still think they're cool!

W00t :D I'm about half way thru completing it now... I've had a play of it and semi-tuned it and man, it sounds so cool!

Will post audio files when its finished! :D

How complete was the kit? Circuit board and components to solder on I imagine. You have to fashion your own case evidently. You putting it in a rack-mount case?

  25. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

Actually, it was a fully assembled circuit board with components already soldered on, and with battery attachment and so on. Gunna replace the battery with a DC power supply though, just for ease of use. The only thing that wasn't included was an on/off switch, which I bought (got an illuminated one :D).

I'm putting it inside a project box from Maplin's. Its going to look quite cool when its finished... I've not got the foldable rubber aerial in it yet... just the standard telescopic one that came with the kit. It's got a mic stand mount which will attach to my keyboard stand :D It's going to take some practice and tuning to get it how I like it.

There was an option in the instructions to "change the timbre" make a coil around a certain transistor, which turns the output signal to a saw-wave rather than a sine wave... how does that work?!?! Some sort of bizzarre EM feedback thing, maybe?

Not sure how the coil interacts with the transistor, but saw wave should sound more like strings, if you want to try that.

  27. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

Yeah I like the saw sound better, just because it sounds less like a generic synth. And the delay/overdrive settings sound really kewl :p. Overdriven theremin? YOU BETCHA! Chorus, flange and reverb sound really cool too :D

  37. goldfish

Mmm hmm.. :D But with a screwdriver and a seconds notice I could go back to sine wave ;)

Or you could put a switch in the circuit to switch the coil in/out to change it whenever.

SPDT switch, with one leg feeding the coil, one leg bypassing it.
