    Hi all at major geeks
I am building a new pc and was wondering if it was possible to keep the 16GB 2 x 8 GB ddr4 3200 and add it to the 32 GB 2 X 16 GB ddr4 3200 Corsair Vengeance making 48 GB of RAM. Will it affect performance?
    Thanks for any assistance

As long as it's all DDR4 3200 and you have the available slots, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. While I haven't worked with anything newer than PC1oo/133 (yeah, I'm old and out of practice), I used to be able to mix and match RAM sticks to my heart's content as long as the speed rating was the same.

    Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

In NO WAY can anyone answer that question without first knowing what motherboard you will be using in this new build. Sorry @DangitallRedux, but that was bad advice!

DDR5 is the current memory standard - and it has out for over 4 years now. That means almost all new motherboards support DDR5, NOT DDR4. And DDR4 and DDR5 are NOT compatible. You cannot even physically insert DDR4 into a DDR5 slot (or vice versa) without physically damaging the RAM, or the slot, or both.

@costac19 - you can still find motherboards on the market that use DDR4 but it is rapidly being phased out. Perhaps more importantly, it really makes no sense to build a "new" computer using legacy DDR4 RAM. DDR5 is far superior, will carry you way further into the future, and perhaps most important, most new and certainly all future CPUs will support DDR5.

Given the information provided, and with the caveat I gave, my response was one hundred percent correct. If there was not enough information provided at the outset, then do not blame me.

No it wasn't. Come on dude! Please do just a tiny bit of homework before digging yourself into an even deeper hole.

The OP never gave us the model number of the motherboard he was planning to get. Therefore, "we" have no clue what type RAM it supports.

Claiming "available slots" is all that matters is simply wrong. I say again, most new motherboards support DDR5, not DDR4. They are not compatible.

    Are DDR4 and DDR5 compatible?

And while most DDR4 motherboards will support just about any DDR4, not all CPUs do. Why would motherboard makers even have memory QVLs if all they needed to say was all DDR4 is compatible with all DDR4 boards.

I am not blaming you for there not being enough information at the outset. The problem is you jumped to inaccurate conclusions without having enough information.

And for the record, odds are I'm older than you - but I don't assume what I knew to be true back in the day, still is. Since you admit you are out of practice, it would be best to verify facts before posting.

I still stand by what I wrote. Given the original question, my answer was correct. Period. You have added other things, which may have been better if the originator had asked them but did not. The original poster can take whatever he or she wishes from what has ensued.

It is indeed possible that you are older than I. Possible, but not necessarily likely. However, this has absolutely nothing to do with the conversation...which, for me, is done.
