Tile Pretty much says it all. I would like to learn the basics of Linux (like how to spell Linux). Both computers (generic desktop and Dell Latitude E6400 Win7) have a burner, so that is an option.

Many different flavours of Lunix :) to choose from. They all look quite different.

From my dabblings, I recently tried Linux Mint (Cinnamon desktop), liked it and Q4OS which looks and feels very much like Windows XP.

I was also quite partial to Ubuntu a while back

Some Linux distros are tricky with wifi card some not

Here is a good page for you to start on

Linux Live CD / USB the best way to start and easy. Simply download the ISO. I usually burn to CD as I like my optical burner and a lot cheaper and easier than having loads of USB thumb drives.

I still can't fathom out the file structure of Linux and it always drives me nuts but eventually it will be the way to go I think.

There is a handy Linux utility called Wine which allows you to install Windows based software on Linux too.

Some distros, from memory the one with KDB desktop should be avoided, imo

    Have fun

OK, I have Downloaded Cinnamon on my computer then cut/pasted to a blank 16G thumb drive. Now what? help?

At this point I don't know how to verify my ISO.

you need Rufus or UNetbootin to create a usb from the iso.

OK I need to get an ISO file for a Win7 compatible Linux live OS. I want to do some minor surgery on my W7NT HD. Suggestions safe locations to DL from?

Hi Wendy, what exactly do you need to perform on the Win7 HDD?
Will this require you to boot to another OS, or is there another way?

If you want to make a bootable USB of Linux, then you need to understand whats going on and how to go about it correctly.
Here is a guide on doing so using Linux Mint which is probably best to start with if you come from a windows environment.
Watch for the URL's which will point you to the same ISO download page.

    Other options....

Easiest way is to just download the .iso file and burn it to CD (as you have a burner). You will need to have software that can do this. IMGBurn works well but many others

Then make sure that your bios is set to boot from the optical drive ie DVD as 1st boot choice and Mint or other will load. May take a couple of minutes

    Wrong. It will never boot.

Please don't do a thing to the installed Windows 7 on your hard drive!!! You don't want to lose any programs and files and as long as you stay off the internet with it after January 2020, the laptop will still be very usable.

At this point I'm looking for an ISO image. I trust Major Geeks for downloads, other sites not so much.I did get a copy of Rufus from Major Geeks, for what it is worth. Then I have to learn the basics about Linux.

Got it! I am a little paranoid, So when the Linux download page did not spell out it was Live! compatible I was very reluctant to trust it. Finally I decided to trust google. and did the procedure. Linux Cinnamon is similar enough to Windows I went straight to the problem files and deleted them, freeing up 6 Gig or more, nothing to sneeze at. Thank you everyone who was patient and ever so helpful. Now to learn more about Linux...

    Again, THX folks.

I need to run it along side Win 7, That means understanding where Linux Live! stashes things on the HD.

Play with the Live version first. The folder structure is very different from windows.

If you are eventually going to dual boot, from the same drive, it will probably install the GRUB bootloader so take your time to understand it. Hence why I say play with the Live version first.

Using the Live version(s) will also allow you to ascertain whether there are other Linux variants that you prefer and that are easier to navigate for windows users.

My suggestion, for what its worth, would be for you to pick up an old 2nd hand laptop and install Linux on that for now.

A Linux Live doesn't "stash" anything on the hard drive.

You make a USB stick with persistence. If you don't enable persistence, every time you boot up the USB stick, you'll have to redo all the changes; there will also be no bookmarks in your browser, no addons.
All the changes are written to the persistence folder on the USB stick.
