can I monitor and stop sound apps in XP

I wonder if any one has ever heard of an app that will allow me to monitor the different apps that are using my sound card for play back... and possibly enable or disable them.


Lets just say....

I have a game I am playing that is in beta testing.. that game has no option "YET" for toggling the sound on and off. so..... when imp playing the game the only way to stop the sound is to mute the sound card or turn off my speakers.

But....

I want to listen to win amp... or a streaming football game while playing this game instead of hearing the sound effects.

I can listen to both but I can only control the volume of the other apps "the game app does not even have an option to change the games volume". So basically to control its volume I would use the wave volume control on the sound card. so if I listen to music or the football game I get the annoying intrusion of the sound files paling from the game.

does any one have any ideas or has heard of any apps that might allow me to have control over this?

I was thinking some app that can monitor and control DX sound events..

any ideas would be appreciated.

the game engine should certainly have a control on the sound, so if you dont see it in a user interface menu, do some searching for engine commands for that game and find the sout output values. it should be very doable.
