Can I save my hard drive?

My computer has been working fine
then all of the sudden, the hard drive shuts off.
This has happened several times. over a six week time period
Please tell me if my suspected cause, is possible?.
I suspect the bearings on the hard drive are going out.
Would this cause an increase in amperage draw?
Resulting in auto shut down?
Also can oil be applied to help extend the life of said hard drive?

I have a 2001 gateway with XPSP2 a 20 gb maxor hard drive.
Extremely heavy use over the last 7 years.
Yes I know I should be happy with the use I have already enjoyed,
But at present time thanks to my 80 gig external drive taking a crap I have no way to save files. so I could replace the drive.
I am most intrested in saving this drive with a drop or two of oil.
Has anyone done this or heard of this being possable?

hey there mate well maybe if you turn off your computer and check that every thing is plugged in right and that all your connection wires are in very good condition and also the ports on the motherboard of which it is plugged into!!!

-if all of them are in good condition i suggest getting new hard drive and simply use nero to make a back up of your current hard-drive onto the new 1 and basically you'll have all your old software saved on the new 1!!!

-if its sentimental value that the HDD poses to you then just go into the bios menu upon booting the computer andjust double check to see that nothing is out of the ordinary and if all thats is ok maybe its just oldage thats getting to your HDD
