I'm tryingto figure out if I can upgrade my CPU without upgrading my mobo. My mobo is an ASUS A7V-333 and my CPU is an AMD AthlonXP 2000+. I've checked the ASUS and the AMD websites, but I still can't figure out if I can swap out to a faster CPU.

Mainly I'm wondering if I can upgrade to an AthlonXP 2800+, 3000+ or 3200+?

    Thanks,

Depends on the version of your mobo: If your board is a Revision 1.01, you can go to 2600+.
If your board is a revision 2.0, you can use a 3000+

Sandra tells me I have version "rev 1.xx". I'm assuming this is nothing I can change and I max out at the 2600+? Do I need to be concerned with FSB speeds of the 2600? Do you know what frequency that actually runs at?

    Thanks!

Believe that on the ASUS a7v333 the FSB can run between 100MHz to 227MHZ and yes you can tweak the value between these ranges.. If you really want to start tweaking these things then I suggest you post in the Overclockers forum as it's all a bit beyond me. :)

Wait a minute. Is it just me or does the "cpu support" page link you posted list the "Athlon XP 3000+(333 MHZ FSB)(Model 10)(Barton)" as the fastest workable chip? Am I reading this thing right?

If you look youll see for A7V-333 version 1.01 the max is a Athlon XP 2600 (266FSB)(Model 8)(Thoroughbred)

    Good Luck

Not so a motherboard has no say so on the stock X rating. As long as he gets a CPU with a 133/266 FSB he will be fine.....Actualy if he gets an unlocked CPU he can run a 3200+ @ 133/266 and up the X to compensate . That is assuming he has X controle in the bios.

{edit} my brother is running a KT333 chipset and hes running 166/333 FSB just fine....Link
