Can I use 7ZIP instead of WinRAR?

    I would like to know if I can use 7zip in place of WinRAR? I like the fact that 7zip is free whereas WinRAR is not. My version of WinRAR is not the latest and I am getting a "corrupt header" message, so I was hoping I would have better luck with 7zip.
