Can' increase RAM!!! HELP

Every time I install more than 256 Megs of RAM, the Norton Utilities memory test fails. I'm currently running Windows 98 SE. I have updated Windows with all fixes available and my MB Bios. The memory test passes with 256M but when I increase to 512 the memory test fails and I start getting Windows messages that memory is running low. I've performed all disk and registry enhancements possible using Norton System Works 2001 (defrag, registry cleanup etc...) to no avail.
The problem persist. I've scanned the Microsoft and Asus websites for a solution with no luck. Any input is greatly appreciated.

First thought would be to eliminate bad ram. Remove the ORIGINAL 256 meg stick and try booting with the other. If it works, plug in the other stick and we eliminated bad ram.

Is it the exact same ram would be my next thought.

My final though would be that you probably have 3 slots for RAM. Your probably using 1&2. Try 2&3.

Your not going to gain anything installling more then 256 for Win98. XP yes

I have had Norton Utilities report this also after adding memory. My comp was stable and I didn't trust NU. I ran Memtest86 and it showed everything OK. You might give Memtest86 a try.
