Can no longer burn via Nero or WinXP.

When trying to burn to my ‘crw1610a’ I keep getting the message: “Please insert an empty disc to write to…” –my CD then ejects from the ‘ASUS CRW 1610A’.
This happens when I try to use both Windows in-built burning capabilities –and/or if I use NERO.
-It used to burn flawlessly via Nero or Windows.
Any idea what the problem is now?
I’m double posting this in Software and Hardware forums as I’m not sure if it is a Hardware, or Software problem.
Thanks for your time, and for any suggestions.
    Yours,
    522.

    Have you tried different discs?

Do you have latest firmware as this will add support for newer media?

    yes, and Yes.
-though: there seems to be no recent firmware updates for this burner.
-Whether I use Windows, or Nero, it doesn't work!
The ASUS drive will NOT recognize a blank recordable CD. -it will see any CD with data on it.
    Any other suggestions?

So weird -I really would have thought that this problem would be super-easy to solve(?!) -So how come it isnt? -She used to burn with no probs whatsoever.... ...and I can think of no major change that might have caused this new problem.

I'm, thingking that there is NO solution: that maybe the drive is FUBARed -Writers are fairly cheap, so maybe I should just buy a new one, eh? -Yet, I'd still like to find what the deal is with my ASUS CRW 1610A.
    Thanks for any suggestions/thoughts,
    jimmy.

Who is 'She'? Does this system belong to another user? The reason I am asking is a possible corruption with the drive identifier or the registry made by an application or another device driver installed or uninstalled. Was such a thing done prior to the problem?
Try opening the Device Manager and use the 'Scan for Hardware changes' option first, if that yields no success then removeg the drive from the list by using the 'Uninstall' option, then unistall the software (Nero). Afterwards reboot the system, let XP detect and re-install the drive and then go ahead and re-install the CD burning software. IF XP fails to see the drive there might be more to your problem. Try all these steps especially if you can read from the drive but can not write to it, if 'reading' is also a no go then your drive could be broke as you guessed.

Sorry for the confusion: 'She' refers to my Asus burner, the system is mine and there are no other users.
There is a possibility that a reg cleaner messed this up -but no other hardware has been installed. Still: I'm going to try to uninstall the hardware (asus burner), as well as NERO, and then reinstall it.
    Thanks for your help,

Uninstalled/reinstalled the hardware and still no love.
To sum up: The drive recognises CDs with media on it -but seems to not see blank cds. -Any other ideas?
    -Thanks again,
    522.

If all else fails, try to load the ASPI drivers again by using a Force ASPI v1.7 type program.

is there a way to tell if my drive is simply FUBARed? -I'm more than willing to try any, and all, suggestions to get this thing working -but I'm starting to think that the drive is toast.
    Cheers,
