I have XP Home and had hotmail working. I recently had problems with newly loaded MSN Messenger 6.1 and Windows Messenger 4.7 (residual left on pc) conflicting with each other. So I deinstalled msn messenger 6.1 (messenger 4.7 wasn't even listed in remove programs) and deleted the messenger 4.7 folder. I then downloaded another version of msn messenger and installed it. Now whenever I try to login to either of my 2 hotmail accounts, I keep getting the dialog to re-enter my password over and over (even though I enter the correct pw each time). I tryed to change the pw (and it appears like it did) but still have the same problem. I can access the hotmail accounts on a friends pc, just not mine. Any help please.

Seems to me messenger wasnt uninstalled properlyTry this
Click Start > Run and in the Open: box type the following command (press OK when done):
You can just copy/paste the command
    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
    After try reinstall mess again

ok - I did what jujet84 suggested and it said messenger 4.7 successfully uninstalled. But the problem is still there. I also tryed Kaula and thundermoon suggestions with same results. When I click on forgot password, it lets me reset the password ok (at least it says it did - it even says to use the new password from now on). Then I click continue and it goes right back to the login dialog and back into the same problem. Any more ideas please?

Also I can't find any email to hotmail tech support to ask them about this. All I find is self-help and some automated thing which are of no help. Anyone know of a hotmail tech support email where they will actually help you?

Ok, here is a suggestion for you :
Go to start, run, type "control userpasswords2"
    go to the advanced tab
    Click manage passwords
Delete everything there. Click OK, then click the .NET passport wizard and set up your user account with your hotmail password again. I had this exact same problem earlier on this week and this is how i fixed it. But it may not work for you.

    Heres a screenshot to illustrate.

ok - did that and no difference. There was an entry of "dialup session" in the manage passwords dialog which I didn't think I should delete and so didn't.

yes I deleted cookies and files under "temporary internet files" and rebooted many times. Is that the cache files you mean?

Ok, that shouldn't affect it anyway. Oh well it was a long shot anyway!

    Problem fixed

ok - I did the spybot thing and got No immediate threats. Then I went to some of the links you provided and eventually discovered I had msn.com cookie always disallowed. Changed to always allow and everything works. THANK YOU very much everyone for all the help!
