    Hello,

I am working on an old system of mine (Windows 98 installed on a Dell Latitude CPi w/ Pentium II and 128 MB RAM). After cleaning up a virus and spyware (all without internet connectivity), I now can not view web pages. Pinging my router works, but when pinging a web site, such as Yahoo or others that don't block ping requests, I get an 'unkown host' error. Pinging the IP address directly instead of the domain name works. I've checked everything I can think of, and am at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Can you also access websites using the IP address rather than the URL?

Try clearing your DNS cache from the command prompt. The below command will do this:

    ipconfig /flushdns

No. I can't get to web sites via their IP address either. Also, ipconfig /flushdns does not work - it tells me what the vaild command options are as if I entered an invalid switch. I have continued to look for solutions and have discovered nothing new. Also, I installed Firefox off CD and it can not locate web sites either.

Any other thoughts? Thanks for replying!

Found the problem. Or rather a fix to the problem. Doing a search for DNS problems, I found a couple of utilities that fix the Winsock and TCP settings and registry entries on various versions of Windows. I tried one, as I had nothing to loose, and viola...a reboot afterwards and all is well. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

Sorry about that! Win98 does not support the flushdns option.

Do you have or can you get HijackThis onto this PC somehow? (like from a floppy, a flashdrive or a CD).

If so, follow the below steps.

Make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
