Can not access USB filesystem root : filesystem.exe

I plugged a USB external drive (e:\) into a computer (XP) that had been infected, but which Sophos claimed to have sorted. Sophos flagged a message that e:\filesystem.exe was infected and it was deleting it.

On removal of the USB drive and plugging into an XP (SP3) laptop with Norton, scans by Norton, Trojan Hunter and Spyware terminator showed no problem, but clicking on the drive thows up the "choose the program you want to open this file" dialog. Sub directories are accessable and readable, and one can then go up to the root directory, where things look OK.

A file "filesystem" is visible, but is showing the trashcan icon, and indeed it does lead to the trashcan. Renaming it makes no difference.
No other problems so far with the laptop filesystem.

Any ideas on what has been corrupted and a possible fix ?

Sounds like there is an autorun file on it. Right click the drive and choose explore...

    Hmm, thanks,
There was an autorun.inf, which I had tried re-naming.
I have moved that and the renamed trash can into a sub-directory.
There now appear to be no files in the directory, only sub-directories.

    Right click:
    Open : get program selector
    Explore: get program selector
Explore XP: get a directory listing

OK, I seem to have a solution.
I created an empty folder, then deleted it.
A "System Volume Information" folder then appeared.
I can now go to "My Computer" and click on the the drive icon and it opens as usual.
    cheers.....

Interesting solution, but if it works, awesome :)
