can not burn or copy

my laptop has developed a problem, i can read any CD/DVD but if i try to burn or copy i get an empty disk.

if i try to burn/copy with Nero or Ultra iso the PC goes through all the correct procedures and shows that copy/burn is in progress and ejects the disk at the end saying that "burn successfully completed" but if i then try to read data from the disk it is empty, is there any way i can check if the burner is broken or if it is a software problem.
The burner is Philips DVD +- RW SDVD8431

I had that problem before it was the burner that was at fault i buy a new burner problem fix.

 

This does sound like a hardware problem.
Because two different authoring (DVD writing) programs are telling you they successfully burned your disk, but the disk is still blank, I fear that the DVD RW will have to be serviced or replaced.

I asked the question knowing that the answer was a new burner but just hoped it could be something else, so off to the computer shop with some money in my hand :cry
