I've got a 'friends' laptop here. I can ping anywhere (router, other PCs on LAN, www.google.com, my DNS server), but cannot ping the laptop itself. I cannot browse the internet or connect to the internet in any other way.

    Thanks for your help!

Cant say I have the answer but think about this. It is obviously getting an IP(you can ping). It has internet connectivity(you can ping Google). It sounds like you have a DNS issue or a browser issue. Try typing 216.239.57.99 in a browser. If google comes up then you definately have a DNS issue and your computer is not resolving names. Check your TCPIP properties or do an IPCONFIG /all and see if you have a DNS server listed. If you do I might start looking at your browser.

    get back with us

Can't look at it right now, i'll do all that and confirm, but I checked earlier and I did have a DNS server when I did IPCONFIG /ALL and all programs (AIM, spysweeper, etc.), not just IE, are unable to connect.

    :(

Got it. After you get back with us, Let us know if you are running a Static or Dynamic configuration and what browser you are using.

The Computer had both IE and Firefox on it. It's not my computer, but I was the one who put Firefox on it, not sure if the owner uses it or not. Anyway, I never got to work on it last night, I got distracted. I'm at work now, but I'm not sure what you mean by 'static or dynamic' configuration. MY ISP assigns my modem a dynamic IP, the network connection on the laptop (and the other PCs on the LAN) is set to automatically obtain an IP from the router, so I guess that'd be dynamic as well.

I'll get back to you after 5pm(EST).

Oh, I should also mention that I already Ran WinSockXPFix (just because it's so easy, it's worth a shot) and that I cannot ping this PC from other computers either. That is, the computer can ping but cannot BE pinged.

Okay, I'm back on the laptop now... Just did ipconfig /all, and cofirmed that I do have a DNS server address that I can ping...

Also, putting IP Addresses directly into IE does not help. I do not believe this is a DNS issue. I realized that Norton Internet Security was installed, but everything, including the firewall, is disabled... I might uninstall norton after I eat.

    Any other suggestions?

Well, I can't uninstall Norton, it wants me to be logged in as a Norton Superuser or some other such bulls***... I'm beginning to get fed up with this machine....

It sounds like you tried everything that that I would of already. Is the OS XP? If it is maybe then ensure that the latest service packs are installed. Or even better reinstall the network driver. Other computers not being able to ping it is fishy unless it is Nortons doing it. If all else fails would you friend be opposed to a reinstall?

I'll try installing SP2 tomorrow, I don't believe it's on there. good idea, worth a shot at least.

Yes, it is XP, i disabled windows firewall as well. Tried removing the card a number of times, perhaps I'll try some different drivers as well.

It may come down to me formatting this thing... I'm just not eager to format, it's time consuming and I feel like I've been defeated when I have to do that...

I had the same problem that you had for the past few days. Could ping ok, but could not get connected to internet. looked at what you were doing and saw norton. that clued me in. I just removed it and am back up on the internet! Thankyou, thankyou!
