Can Security tool permanently damage a drive?

I recently ran into the virus Security Tool, and believe me, this is an experience you can do without.
I plugged my external Samsung portable drive into a friend's laptop and XP couldn't recognise it.
Then up came the Security Tool screen.
We immediately shut down without a reboot and I unplugged my portable drive. But the next time I tried to use it, it came up as a drive letter, but without any storage capacity.
Reformatting doesn't work, even in Disk Manager, so it appears to be creamed. Can anyone suggest a rescue mission?
The drive is near new and I miss it.

There should be a Date of man. and a serial nr on the sticker of the drive.
At least with Western Digital you can go to their website and run the serial nr and if in warranty go to a page and get (print) RMN and shipping label.
One issue is hard drives sold thru other mass volume sellers like Dell do their own warranty and its not transferrable. So check the website.

Thanks for the idea, Rosiesday, but I think it's out of warranty, and anyhow, my curiosity relates to whether or not a virus can cause physical damage to a hard drive.
Most people think not, but I'm not so sure.

    Hi

Its possible for malware to mess up the Master Boot Record (MBR) which could cause issue, but in most cases deleting the master partition of the drive and then recreating it and formatting can recover the HDD, can also use tools from the maker maybe HUTIL from Samsung HERE may help

or ESWIN from HERE as its for externals.

Or via Windows its this guide HERE to delete a partition (but be careful to get the right drive number)

Thanks, Halo, you're always there with good ideas. I was hoping to be able to save my date, but it's probably spread around elsewhere, so no worry.
I guess what surprises (and depresses) me is how this wretched Security Tool apparently got through my normally efficient Panda Cloud, Malwarebytes and Private Firewall without showing up.
