I dont know if im asking in the right place(it seemed logical) but im just curious to see if the new pc im buying is really worth it. Im pretty good with computers but I certainly dont know everything :)

Its Dell Certified Refurbished Desktop PC

    Here are the specs.

    OptiPlex 745 Small Form Factor: Intel Pentium D Processor 820 (2.80GHz, 2X1M, 800MHz FSB)
    Certified Refurbished
    NTFS,File System
    USB 2 Button Mouse
    Keyboard
RoHS Compliant Lead Free Chassis and Motherboard
    Energy Star Label
    Operating System Label
    DVI (Digital) Adapter Card
    Operating System CD
    Shipping Material
    No Resource CD
    1.44 MB Floppy Disk Drive
    Genuine Windows XP Home
    Processor Label
    DVD Software
80 GB EIDE SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
    24X CD RW/DVD Combo Drive
    System Documentation
    1 GB DDR2 NON-ECC SDRAM 667MHz (2 DIMMs)

Is this good? i noticed it comes with a video card but not an audio one, do pc's usually come with those? if not, can i use the one from my old pc? what does it look like? and whats a "no resource cd"?? Thanks for your advice!! :wave

2.8ghz processor, and 800mhz fsb coupled with DDR2 @ 667mhz is no slouch!

Depending on what you want your rig to do, it will execute most modern programs at will, and even give you some space for multitasking!

If you intend to use it for 'high end' applications (ie gaming etc), then its probably MOR and a lot will depend on the size of your GPU, PSU etc

To establish whether or not it represents value for money, this would depend on the asking price?

It is most likely that the motherboard contains 'onboard' sound, hence the reason for the absence of a sound card.

The sound card is probably built-in, part of the motherboard. But if it's not, you can use your old sound card, no problem. No Resource CD just means that you don't get the Dell CD; no drivers or extra apps included. The only thing I see that may be an issue is the hard drive. 80gb was big about 2 or 3 years ago, but now, 80gb is just a bit small. As long you're not into downloading lots of music or video files, you shoud be OK. And there's no DVD burner. A new DVD burner is about $50-$60 if you want to add one in the future.... it doesn't really mention a video card, only a DVI adapter card which could mean the video card; Dell is famous for being vague and ambiguous.

Overall, it's a decent PC. Not great, but nothing to scoff at either.

You really must get the drivers CD as well as the operating system one!!!!!!!!!!!

Dell produce the recovery on TWO cds, one labelled operating system and one labelled resource cd - drivers.

Without the second one you would not be able to reinstall Windows in the event of a crash.

Your supplier should be able to download one from Dell and burn it for you. I have seen 'Certified Refurbished' Dell pcs sold with 640x 480 16 colour graphics because of this omission.
