Being a bit week on the teck side of things I rely on software for just about every thing including tweaking. I know it's not the best but there was one pc accelerator program out there that I really liked what it did but can not find no matter how hard I've tried. It's not PC Boost or SpeedUpMyPC (unless the later versions of SUMPC have changed) but it did have a normal run mode, or an advanced run mode. The advanced run mode had so many options to go through a novice like myself would easily spend a half hour going through the page of tweaks but on normal mode there was a few options and then simply run. Whatever this program was I really liked how my computer responded to it as far as browsing speed, download speed, and simple response time. This program by default set XP start menu to > for every option so if you hovered over my computer it brought up another menu,,,that's about all I can think of to describe the program I'm seeking. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I'm afraid that I don't know the program you're talking about, but almost all the features you've mentioned here can be done right in Windows, without the need of another program cluttering your computer!

XP can be tweaked for speed quite easily, actually. Following the steps in this post should show you how to lower resource consumption on your machine, making it perform better.

As for browsing/download speeds, there are a few things you can do.

    1. Use a better browser - there are lightweight alternatives you can try that are faster than the average Internet Explorer or Firefox installation. One such example is K-meleon, but other users might have other suggestions, as well.

    2. (For Firefox users) - Try the Fasterfox extension. This lets you tweak a lot of network settings. It also caches links on a page silently while your bandwidth is idle.

As for turning start menu items into menus themselves, please try this:

    1. Right-click the 'Start' button
    2. Select 'Properties'
    3. On the 'Taskbar and Stat Menu Properties' dialog, select the 'Start Menu' tab
    4. On the 'Customize Start Menu' dialog, select the 'Advanced' tab
    5. Under 'Start Menu Items' for each item you want to turn into a menu, select the radio button next to 'Display as a menu'
    6. Apply your settings.

Now, each item you've configured should have a submenu with its contents on the start menu. For example, My Computer displayed as a menu should show at least your A:, C:, D:, etc drives on a submenu.
    4. Press the 'Customize' button
    5.

The reason I wanted to find this program again wasn't really to do tweaking of the menu kind or anything like that. I wanted to find it again because it worked at making the computer boot faster and every single program on my computer opened faster and my internet download speed would not only hit 5153 kbps but hold there instead of fluxuating. I was downloading at around 622KB but am now doing between 350 and 450. Don't get me wrong, this computer is what it is and works pretty good actually but if I could only remember the name of the program in question it would be even faster. The reason I forgot what program this was cause I was dumb and didn't write it down and didn't make a backup when I wiped my drive clean. :cry

This requirement is why I posted this:

IMO installing/running software for speed is like screwing for virginity!

Have a look at this link. I practically guarantee your machine will be much faster after following these steps. In fact, I would be willing to bet that the program you are after does a lot of the same things!

Thnx, but I already have done all that immediately after my last clean install. My system is fast for what it is but I'm just never done trying. Thnx though.

I know that program (that I can't remember) doesn't actually run in the background or anything. It just changes a bunch of setting. Once you run it you reboot and you never see it again. No system processes or anything. I just don't know what else it changes besides the basics.
