Hello. I'm new to MajorGeeks. I think I have a problem with my computer.
Lately my computer's been acting wierd. Sometimes it locks me out (a box pops up and tells me that the computer is in use and has been locked, that I need a password to get into it), other times runs slowly for no apparent reason, sometimes the browser won't close and I have to press CTRL ALT DEL to get it off the screen.
I recently downloaded a new Norton Antivirus and the problem seems to have started around the time that I first activated it. Could anyone tell me if this is spyware or malware, or just the Norton Antivirus readjusting?
thanx for your time and consideration...

    Hi and welcome

Norton should have no reason to re-adjust, may have been a corrupted update of norton if you updated over an old version, in which case i'd be tempted to uninstall norton and re-install.

but to double check any other issues regarding the popups ( what were they by the way, what did it say, which file did the message say was locked? ) I would run through our guide below,

These are our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
    • Bitdefender
    • Panda Scan
    • HijackThis

    Hello Halo

Alright. I ran the Read and Run Me thing. In safe mode, I found four objects (tracking cookies) with Adaware. Everything else was clean. CCleaner found a bunch of gunk that's now gone, and reported two issues that were fixed.
I scanned with BitDefender and there was nothing found. However, I didn't save the scan results (I'd closed the window by then).
Even though nothing was found, should I still proceed with the HiJackThis! scan?

    Re: HJT log

You never ran PandaActiveScan per step 6 of the READ ME but I will tell you based on what I see thus far, your problems are not malware. Uninstall Norton AV and see if your problems go away.
