Can you please tell me I got this computer clean? (Read & Run Me First is Complete)

    Hi there,

Despite many attempts to keep my elderly father from clicking on ads and such and getting his computer haxx0red, it looks like he's done it again. He had redirects on both browsers (IE and FF) and multiple other infections, including at least two trojans. I ran the "Read and Run Me First" as well as followed the instructions on the "got redirects?" page. Can you please look at these logs and see if everything looks clean?

    Two questions about future prevention:

    1) On a few of the logs, it's showing that "Microsoft Security Essentials" as an AV, even though I removed it in favor of Avast. I don't want it to interfere with Avast -- what is the best way to find and remove the residuals?

    2) Can you suggest any more preventative advice for setting up a computer for someone who is not internet savvy and easily falls for clicking on things, despite what I've repeatedly told him? Here's what I've done:

    -Installed WOT on both browsers
    - Installed Ad Block Plus on FF, but is there a safe ad blocker for IE 7?
    - Installed Secunia to make sure everything is up-to-date
    - MS Updates are auto-updated
    - Disabled Auto Runs
    - Took away his admin privileges
    - Avast is the AV

Can you suggest anything else? The main problem, I think, is the lack of ad block on IE. I can try to "hide" IE from him and make FF look like IE, but if there's a safe ad block on IE to keep him from clicking on scams, that would be best.

    Thank you very much!!

More logs attached. TDSS Killer showed a bunch of stuff (about 20), but they were all unsigned files. I can attach these if needed.

    Thanks again!!

Your logs are clean, but I still see users with Admin. privileges. IE is not less secure than FF. Installing WOT is a good protection, but the best protection will be education. Perhaps there is a computer learning service in your area for the "elderly".

Do pay attention to the last link in the clean up procedures for how to protect yourself.

Please put ComboFix directly on your desktop, not where you have it of the following will not work:
    Running from: c:\documents and settings\Administrator Acct\Desktop\Malware Removal Toolbox\ComboFix.exe

Since you are not having any malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0

Re: Can you please tell me I got this computer clean? (Read & Run Me First is Complet

Thank you Tim! I made one password protected Admin account for myself to maintain his computer when need be -- that's the one I ran the fixes from. That should clean the whole computer, right? Or should I have done everything from his account? Or are you saying that I should give no accounts Admin privileges until something needs to be done? (Is that even possible?) There may be more residual user accounts under the "old hard drive" (he took it to a computer place when his HDD crashed), but they're not active, or does that not matter to malware?

I'm looking for a senior computer class in our town, but they're only held once a year. I'm not sure if it would matter, though, as I have attempted to educate him, but I honestly think his mind is deteriorating because he keeps believing spam and "too good to be true" advertisements that I warn him about. :(

Good eye, Tim! I actually did have it directly on the desktop when I ran it, but when I cleaned everything up after running everything, I put it in a folder.

Thank you! AutoRunDisable.reg is still on the desktop, even though it said it merged with the registry. Is it safe to delete that? There's also a settings.dat file that popped up on the desktop during the scan -- can I delete that too?

Lastly, do you think any residuals from "Microsoft Security Essentials" is interfering with Avast? Or is that unlikely? (It might be under his old hard drive transfer, I'm assuming, but it's not actively running.)

    Thank you so very much!!

Re: Can you please tell me I got this computer clean? (Read & Run Me First is Complet

    Code:
    Users on this computer:
    Is Admin? | Username
    ------------------
       Yes | Administrator
       Yes | Administrator Acct
              | ASPNET
              | Guest (Disabled)
              | HelpAssistant (Disabled)
       Yes | Owner
              | SUPPORT_388945a0 (Disabled)
You should create a limited user account for your Dad.

You can delete the Reg. fix from your desktop, but the settings.dat file will disappear once you run the final steps as it will return to being hidden.
I did not see any residuals from MSE. It should not be interfering with Avast.

You are most welcome. Safe surfing. ;)
